The main house at Clover Hill is divided into two rentals . The Main house "The James " and the "The Rosalie" separate In Law apartment - both rentals are combined in this listing making it sleep up to 10 guests comfortably. The farm was acquired by my great Uncle James & Aunt Rosalie downsizing in 1950. I continue the family tradition of running the farm in hopes to pass on its 115 acres of rolling hay fields and horse pastures onto another generation. In 2015 I renovated both houses with guest rental and family gatherings in mind. The James the 4 bedroom, 2 bath main portion can sleep 8, Its wide open living dining area, sun porch and outside patios makes it suitable for a couples retreat or family get together. The Rosalie, one bedroom one bath self sufficient apartment on two levels giving you privacy and freedom from the rest of the house. The large west facing deck is a favorite spot for sunset hour. Two separate drives retain the privacy and detachment of both spaces. The nightly rate for this listing is priced for 8 guests (additional guests are $20 per night / per guest after 8.) Well behaved pets are allowed but must be mentioned at booking. Its suggested that pets not familiar with being left alone be crated and not left alone longer than 3 hours. Pets must be in a flea preventative program.

Beautiful property and location! Great get together for extended family. Plenty of places inside and outside to gather and enjoy each others company in a very quiet and private setting.
Lovely stay in the country.
Nice beds and appliances. Not chic or grand, but comfortable ….it’s just exactly what we wanted.
Beautifully situated on lovely farm.
We rented the James and the Rosalie for Thanksgiving week so that we could be with our adult kids without having to be exposed to others. The house was charming and the property was lovely. W had a great time and would definitly return.

Home sweet home!
Eight members of our family visited relatives in the area. We found the perfect place to stay. The house felt like home right a way. Will definitely be visiting again.
Both the James and Rosalie rentals are wonderful properties! Comfortable beds with all the updated amenities. Beautiful views of horses in the fields. I highly recommend this for a family vacation to relax and enjoy each other in beautiful and peaceful setting!
We had a lovely stay on this extremely beautiful and peaceful property. The large house accommodated our group with ease. It is charmingly and eclectically furnished and is a uniquely historical family home, not a generic rental space. Bring your own toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen sponge(s), dishwasher and laundry detergent, and bath soap.
The property had plenty of space for us all and the dog. Private and peaceful with outdoor and indoor hanging out spots. Kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed. I will say that this has 1 area with 2 twin beds that is listed as a bedroom, but it is actually an open landing. with no privacy. Luckily one of our adults did not come and so this wasn't an issue for us.
This is an amazing house and property. So peaceful and has scenic views, with beautiful horses nearby. Great for getting together and having space to enjoy, both inside and out. Fantastic host! Very accommodating and the house was stocked with necessities. We would highly recommend this place to anyone considering a stay in the Richmond area!
Wonderful farmland experience in beautiful rolling countryside of Virginia. Easy to communicate with host. Loved the history of the house/land told throughout the house with pictures and mementos.
We enjoyed our stay very much. We chose the location to access nearby civil war sites and D-day Museum. All within a short drive of our site. We cooked our own meals and found the farm kitchen a little lacking. Minor issue with grill and outdoor space. We highly recommend the location and site. Assuming we stay again we would simply bring BBQ utensils.

Lovely Getaway
Very peaceful, albeit remote. A nice retreat if your looking for a getaway to spend quality time with folks.
Property was as listed/described. Large table to enjoy visiting, beautiful outdoors, comfortable beds. 7 people and 2 infants stayed very comfortably.
The owner was very easy to get a hold of and responsive.
We enjoyed our stay here for our son's wedding which was at a venue nearby. Everything was clean, kitchen was well stocked for cooking and we had plenty of space for our family. We enjoyed the beautiful and quiet location of the home too! Communication with the host was excellent. We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.
Our family (including our dogs) loved staying at this lovely home, with our in-laws in the adjacent guest house. The location was perfect, with the house in a beautiful, relaxing, and remote setting, but also lots to do (recreation. restaurants, shopping, etc.) about 20 minutes away in Short Pump and Richmond. The indoor decor was charming, and the various outdoor sitting areas were wonderful. All in all a fabulous place to get away.
Our wedding party spent the weekend at this beautiful property and loved every minute of it. Gorgeous home that comfortably accommodated all our friends. 10/10!
If you're looking to get away, this peaceful area is a must! What more could anyone ask for than 115 secluded acres, hiking trails, horses, beautiful views, and even great cell service and wifi in the house (if you need technology while you're there). The house was very clean (my wife and I are taking Covid-19 very seriously), and it was also easy to babyproof as we brought our 11 month old. Lastly, but certainly not least, the showers have new fixtures, great pressure, and plenty of hot water (I know some people really look for this, lol)! Couldn't say enough great things, will definitely be back!
We stayed at this home because it was very close to a venue of a family wedding it was beautiful and peaceful the house was everything it said it would be we had people for dinner for a rehearsal dinner it was comfortable everyone loved it it was calm the owner is awesome and the house is beautiful The grounds are amazing I wish I had more time just to stay on the property and enjoy the Peacefulness thank you to the owner Ellen for the opportunity to stay in her beautiful home she was wonderful with us if I needed anything I just texted her she got right back to me within five minutes it couldn’t have been a smoother weekend
The property was large, well furnished and clean. Kitchen well stocked with lots of extras in the kitchen including food. It was very quiet and served us well as we had activities in both Richmond and Charlottesville. Check in and out was easy.

Wonderful time!
We had this house for our extended family for the weekend. We were in the area for my niece's wedding. The kids loved being able to run over the fields and say hello to the horses. There were plenty of beds for everyone. We had a couple of meals around the big dining room table and sat on the porch with the windows open to enjoy the warm weather. Thank you to our hostess Ellen, who stayed in touch throughout our stay to make sure all was well. Her directions and little signs around the house were very helpful. We would love to stay there again. Karen and family

Peaceful getaway. Very much enjoyed the property.
Hurricane Michael put a damper on our first night but once at the property the following day, we enjoyed our stay. Small housekeeping items that had not been addressed such as, pile of towels left behind from either previous stay or housecleaning and garbage bags left outside. Property owner was accommodating and responsive.

Peaceful, hospitable, well-appointed farm house in Virginia horse country.
Clover Hill Farm provided the perfect getaway for the reunion of a group of college girlfriends. The rolling hills and serenity of the property can be enjoyed with the comfortable outdoor areas and seating. We loved seeing the horses being tended to in the distance. Both houses (we rented both the James and the Rosalie) are eclectically, yet tastefully decorated with meaningful family memorabilia and different forms/styles of art. All bathrooms are spacious, clean and rustic, yet modernized; the bedrooms contained comfortable beds with wonderfully selected bedding throughout. The farm is remote enough that it might be a good idea to pick up any snacks/food/last-minute necessities (shampoo/conditioner) in Short Pump (Wegman’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Mall, Target), about 20 minutes away, before settling in. The kitchen is well-equipped and the dining room, living room and enclosed sun porch provide lots of comfortable gathering spaces. Ellen was accommodating, warm, helpful, and always responded quickly to questions. She has lovingly maintained and preserved this family keepsake. Our group would definitely return to Clover Hill if we meet in Richmond again.

Awesome Weekend Getaway!
We had a fantastic weekend getaway at Clover Hill Farm - if only it could have been longer! The house had all the charm of an old farmhouse with updated amenities to make everyone comfortable. And what a location! We had no idea Goochland County would be so beautiful and such a short drive to Richmond. We enjoyed amazing early morning sunrises and evenings around the fire pit and all the time spent in between, relaxing and catching up with extended family. The farm was just beautiful and our friendly horse neighbors were a big hit with young and old alike.
Ellen was a great host and very responsive through the whole process...thanks for an unforgettable weekend for our whole family. Can't wait to come back again!

About the host
Hosted by Ellen Pons
I grew up in Richmond with backyard horses that summered in Goochland on my great uncle's Clover Hill Farm. I purchased the property from my siblings in 2006. As the 3rd generation steward of this special property I am working to pass it on to my children. I live and work with my husband and extended family in Maryland on our commercial thoroughbred breeding farm. I also am a freelance photographer. I travel to the farm frequently to lend a hand w/ upkeep and relax in a setting that is peaceful and rejuvenating. I am happy to share this special place with like minded travelers that appreciate the beauty of the country.
Why they chose this property
The property is like family to me. Having grown up visiting my great uncle Jim Ball as a child and living here during my college years I felt committed to keeping it in the family. My uncle donated 100 acres of the property to the University of Richmond as a perpetual open space for biological study . This first conservation easement of Virginia was recognized with a historical marker in August of 2019 on its 50th anniversary. Every guest adds to the history and helps with the preservation of this pastoral retreat that is so special to me.
