The Neighborhood:
Woolloongabba is said to mean meeting place in the local Aboriginal dialect, which is a fitting definition even now. These days the suburb is a meeting point for sports and food lovers.
Dotting the skyline is "The Gabba", a sporting ground of cricketing folklore as the scene of some magnificent performances and the famous tied Test in 1960. On game days the footpaths around the Gabba overflow with fans dressed head to toe in the colours of their favourite cricket or AFL team. From here they spill into the Brisbane German Club or the many historic multi-storey Queenslander pubs in the suburbs.
Those more discerning might be seen heading for pre-or post-game drinks at date-appropriate cocktails bars such as Electic Avenue or Canvas, or a high-end meal at 1889 Enoteca, Detour or The Wolfe. A dining precinct also brings the suburb alive at night.
Woolloongabba also has a reputation for antiques – so keep an eye out for small hidden stores and boutiques and keep your eyes peeled for bargains.
Getting Around:
The public transport around the gabba is excellent by Australian Standards.
- Public transport bus is located just outside on Ipswich Rd, Stop 10a
- Uber, Ola & DIDI ride sharing and Taxi services operate 24/7 in Brisbane
