About this property

Beautiful Handcrafted 2 (+) Story Cliff-Side Dwelling with Sweeping Ocean Views

This house's spirit is the essence of serenity. With 180 degree views from every arch and doorway, with the caress of the ocean breeze and murmur of the sea below; this spectacular rustic retreat is the perfect sanctuary designed to revitalize and restore your sense of awe, wonder and tranquility. Casa Faro is a beautifully constructed 2-story (+ Loft) cliff-side dwelling, hand-crafted of tropical hard-wood & red brick over-looking the blue Pacific and close-by, off-shore rock islands. The house is adjoined by a half-acre of fruit-trees and surrounded by patios on three sides. Situated, right next door to Puerto Angel’s historic light-house, amazing ocean views greet you from every angle. Casa Faro has an open floor plan that remains cool and breezy during hot weather. The entire house is equipped with hammocks and is perfect for sea views, whale-watching, bird-watching and Yoga.

Location

Our secluded, end-of-the-road dwelling is situated half-way between the towns of Puerto Angel & Zipolite. Perched on a rocky outcropping, the house is sits on an acre next to Pto. Angel’s historic Light-House with extraordinary ocean views. It’s an 8-minute walk to the nearest small grocery store and main thoroughfare or a 15 -minute walk to the beaches of either Pto. Angel or Zipolite. Half of the ¾ km. road to the house has recently been paved with the remaining section still unpaved. For those days when the sea is calm there’s a steep trail just 1-minute’s walk down from the house to a secluded, rocky/sandy swimming, fishing or snorkeling cove.

Security

The lovely sense of seclusion that Casa Faro’s location affords is additionally made more secure due to the fact that it is situated right next door to Pto. Angel’s Historic Light-House. Although we have never had any incidents of theft at the house, there is a hidden safe available for storing ones valuables such as passports, money etc. The property owners live a two minute walk away, can be called from the house phone, and will make themselves available should any potential concerns arise.

Kitchens, Bedrooms, Bathroom & Shower

Indoor Kitchen

Indoor kitchen is fully equipped with a modern, full-sized refrigerator, a 6-burner Stove with oven, a kitchen sink, a toaster, a micro-wave, a blender and a coffee-maker. The Kitchen includes basic cooking and eating utensils: cloth napkins, table mats, a teapot, flatware, knives, plates, cups, glasses and bowls including complimentary staples (coffee, sugar, salt, cooking oil, fruit basket Plus 5, 5-gallon bottles of purified drinking water). Refrigerator is also pre-stocked with various edibles-for-purchase including milk, beer, sodas, chocolate etc.

Outdoor Kitchen

The Outdoor Kitchen is perched on a shaded/covered patio to the rear of the house directly overlooking the ocean 150 feet below. This outdoor addition consists of a large stone sink (great for cleaning fish), large butcher-block counter top, a brick wood-fired grill with adjoining “Comal” plus a wood-fired clay-oven (great for Pizzas), a picnic table, hammocks and a bar that connects through to the interior living-room area. (Firewood is provided gratis for both the grill and the clay oven which also comes with its own custom-made Pizza spatula)

Adjoining Downstairs Living/Dining Room

The downstairs living room/dining room consists of an 8-person dining room table/chairs, a lounge area with a corner L-shaped couch plus a coffee table, a "Smart T.V." that is internet connected allowing for Netflix viewing.

Second Story Bedrooms, Adjoining Sleeping and Lounge Areas + Internet

The enclosed bedroom is located on the north end of the 2nd floor and contains two queen-size beds (the 2nd one directly up above the other on a window-surrounded 3rd - story loft). This double bedroom is also lockable and inhabits a corner which is both North & East-facing with arched brick ceilings and one wall adorned with a hand-painted mural of Jazz musicians (by famed French muralist Heol Geoffrey, see photos). The third-floor loft-bedroom has wall-to-wall sliding doors that open onto its own private deck with dramatic views of the sunrise over the blue Pacific. The 2nd floor master bedroom is surrounded by large, round, center-axis opening windows with gorgeous views of both garden, patio and sea. This lower bedroom area also has a substantially sized 3- drawer desk and dresser for one’s clothing.

The remainder of the upstairs is a large and open space, boasting Casa Faro's most breath-taking views. Adorned with handsome brick columns and a palm-thatched roof, this space offers sweet, cool relief even on the coast's hottest days.
The open floor plan is easily divisible into multiple sleeping areas. A cozy loft handcrafted of beautiful tropical wood offers a queen size bed with views of the ocean below. Two large mobile single sleeping cots are provided along with one mobile single bed allowing renters to customize their sleeping arrangements. The second floor also includes one turret-shaped section (more privately situated) which has its own double-size, suspended bed and an adjacent area equipped with two commodious hammocks. (Sheets, blankets, pillows and suspended Mosquito nets are provided for each sleeping unit.)

Upstairs Lounge Area

There are multiple hanging/hammocks/ hammock chairs, a couch, a coffee table and multiple benches in the upstairs prow-shaped living room area, again sporting spectacular views of the surrounding ocean 150 feet below.

Internet & Land-line

WIFI and the use of a Land-Line Phone are included in the accommodations.

Bathroom and Shower Facilities

The handsomely wood-crafted Bathroom and (separate) Shower areas are located 15 feet from the front entrance of the house along the front patio’s stone walkway. Due to Oaxaca’s arid coastal climate we decided it prudent to provide an ecological/composting toilet to conserve water. The only difference between a composting toilet and a conventional one is that an ecological toilet uses no water. Instead of flushing the toilet one pours 3 scoops of fine sawdust into the toilet following each use. The human waste and the sawdust fall into a deep pit where they dry and decompose naturally. There is little resulting odor in the bathroom and none in the house. The bathroom is supplied with sawdust, soap, toilet paper and hand towels. The shower is connected to the bathroom but has a separate entrance and is supplied with its own towels. Both bathroom and the shower have beautiful and very private views of the ocean (see photos).

Garden & Orchard

On the northern section of the property, protected from ocean breezes, we've created a terraced garden & orchard that contains over 50 fruit trees including: Mango, Lemon, Mandarin, Orange, Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Plum, Guava, Guanabana, Chicozapote, Anona and Banana. These fruits are seasonal and, when ripe, are readily available to renters.

Wow wow wow
If you’re looking for a spiritual journey, a magnificent Cliff location overlooking a jaw dropping view of waves crushing against incredible rocky formations... and pitch black night skies glittered with the most beautiful stellar sprinkles.... you have to experience this place! Warning: Its ideal for 4-5 adults, not kids safe by North American standards.

Casa Faro Adventure
Fantastic views. Great location. Very private. Home is very rustic and beautiful. Definitely need transportation. Everything is a ways away. Parking accommodations could be more convenient. Not a place for younger children. Need additional safety rails on some balconies and stairways. Was a great stay. With a few tweaks could be spectacular.

Casa Faro
We loved the view from the porches and getting to relax in our hammocks at the end of a day at the beach! We rented a car and feel like it made our trip much more manageable and fun to just take off for the beach and not have to wait or organize a taxi. We also felt we were more able to explore the area having our own vehicle. Everyone was very helpful and Pablo was very quick to respond to any needs we had. Also, book the massage at the house!!!! Incredible and the nicest lady!

Beautiful craftsmanship, not really a house for very young kids
The craftsmanship of which I understand the owner did is amazing, however it should have been finished, as we had taken my daughter with a 2 year old and a 4 year old railings should have been there to prevent them from tumbling the 10-15 feet to the ground. Although not having hot water didn’t really bother me ( several cold showers per day helped in the house with no AC) my wife , my brothers wife and my daughter weren’t too impressed. We were told also that pubs and restaurants were within walking distance, this simply wasn’t the case as being in a house on a Clift with an amazing view was nice it did mean a taxi everywhere. As for that the taxi guy that he set us up with was a really good guy, we all liked him a lot, ( he was also the guy who looked after the place)however at the end of the first 2 weeks when he was busy else where, we discovered he was charging us 2-3 times what the going rate was there, so although I wish him the best, it’s better try other taxis before you get him for the 4-6 trips per day

The house is beautiful, comfortable and exactly as described. Located in a secluded quiet location yet close to town. Love the ocean views and sound of the surf. Would definitely go again. Pablo and Sarah were very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful, artful house with sweeping views
Fantastic house that comfortably housed a family of 7. The views of the sea are spectacular and the crashing of waves make the experience.

Spectacular Accommodation!
We stayed at Casa Faro for 9 nights in April and were overwhelmed by the beauty and privacy this accommodation provided. Pablo and Sarah were great hosts and were very helpful with the orientation and recommendations for day trips and local places to dine. Pablo was also so kind to coordinate a fishing trip with some local fisherman. I can not say enough about how much work, care and detail went into the creation of this beautiful home! We would come back to stay again in a heartbeat! Thank you again Pablo and Sarah!

Absolutely Wonderful!
Mexico dream vacation house. Beautiful craftsmanship, privacy, the sounds of waves crashing on the rocks below, beautiful flowers, plants and fruit trees all around, outdoor cooking on grill and pizza oven as well as nicely stocked kitchen with tortilla press and coffee maker, and great location close to Zipolite and Puerto Angel. I would highly recommend this house!

A Wonderful Stay at Casa Faro
From the moment we pulled up to the house late at night we were in love with this house and property. We could hear the waves sounding off of the rocks below and the lighthouse light was glowing on the cliffside just below the moon. Uri welcomed us warmly and showed us around the property and provided us with a quick series of simple instructions and left us to let us rest after our journey from Oaxaca. We organized our things and set up camp in the hanging bed high above the sea below. Morning came with the fat pink and orange sun rising on the horizon as viewed from between our little bare feet. Every morning we were treated to a wonderful sunrise and just a few minutes walk away we could catch the sun setting on the other side of the lighthouse. Each morning starts with opening the house up below and letting the sun and wind enter the home. We would make ourselves breakfast in the kitchen and start on a pot of coffee. The house was equipped with all of the basic necessities for cooking and preparing lovely meals with fresh ingredients picked up from the market in Puerto Ángel. Cheese, eggs, tortillas, chicken, and of course plenty of fish to choose from. For dinner, we dared to fire up the adobe wood burning oven to cook up some roasted chicken and veg. The outdoor kitchen is well shaded in the late afternoon and perfect for cooking, sitting around the table and drinking wine and beer as a respite from the daily activities whether hiking, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, or just sharing a beach with the sun and some drinks. We loved spending time in the outdoor kitchen and swinging calmly on the hammock. We were unable to bring a car from the city, and at first, it was a worry because Casa Faro is fairly isolated. These worries were quickly overcome. We were able to walk to both Puerto Ángel and Ziplolite in fifteen minutes. A taxi from either location put us back about anywhere from 40-60 pesos depending on the time of day and driver. We also took taxis out to our favorite beaches in the area and it was very affordable. Mixing taxi and collectivo use saved us some good money too. All in all, the location and its isolation is a large part of what makes Casa Faro so magical. The house is well cared for and you can tell that David and Pablo put an incredible amount of love and care into its construction. We loved every moment of our stay and found the house to be the perfect place to come home to from our daily adventures to relax. We hope to return soon!

Host profile image
My name’s David and Casa Faro is the result of a 16-year joint effort between me and my youngest son Pablo (see above photo) who did the vast majority of Casa Faro's creative work and construction alongside his local friends and craftsmen. I am a Commercial Mediator & Flamenco guitarist born and raised as a 5th generation San Franciscan and Pablo (the 6th generation) is a creative builder, musician and organic farmer. Both Pablo and I have spent many years living here in Puerto Angel where we have not only worked alongside each other but also, to our great benefit and education, along side our many costeño friends with whom we have forged life-long friendships. Having come from an urban childhood, coastal Oaxaca is where I first encountered a region where every person (young or old) knows the name of every plant or tree in the forest and every fish in the sea and also knows their relationships, qualities and use. Beginning in 1971 in Salina Del Marquez (and here) I was taught by wiser friends how to cast a net, to dig a well or cut a tree…according to the cycles of the moon. My son Pablo had yet an even earlier start in this place of ancient beginnings where he and his friends have surfed, fished in the sea, planted in the soil and built from the very materials of the immediate environment.

Why they chose this property

I had spent some years in my late twenties living with my first wife and children throughout Mexico, Central America and Oaxaca's coastal regions. (In 1971 I had built a Palapa and dug a well while living in a small fishing village just west of Salina Cruz.) I returned to purchase this property in Puerto Angle by 1998 because of my love for Oaxaca's authenticity, the life-style it offers and especially because of the close friends (nearly family) that I had developed over my many years coming here as a visitor. I also knew that I would ultimately need to create a retreat where I could "go-to-ground" and find relief from an intense career in commercial mediation where I was delivering ADR services throughout the continental U.S. and Central America . I actually began building Casa Faro myself in the year 2000. Breaking ground, me and a local mason built the first floor, arched windows and door structures and then, in 2006, my youngest son. Pablo, returned to build the round brick tool warehouse, reinforce the 1st floor and add the second and third-floors, as well, terrace and plant the Garden (he and one other local co-worker also hand-terraced the entire northern portion of the property by dry-stacking 26 dump-truck loads of quarry-stone and then planting some 50 varieties of tropical fruit trees). All the masonry, patios, fine tropical hardwood doors and shutters, tables, cabinets, benches were hand-crafted with very basic tools by my son Pablo and his local co-worker colleagues. I have lived for extended periods in Casa Faro and in multiple years have used it as a base for flamenco performance tours throughout coastal Oaxaca, Oaxaca city and Mexico City. The house has both a serene meditative and celebratory quality that has been the residential inspiration for many poets, writers, painters, musicians, dancers, yoga practitioners, and healers. Because the architectural space is large and commodious, it is lends itself to diverse and simultaneous activities.

What makes this property unique

We built Casa Faro on its unique 1 1/2 acre because of its dramatic mix of land and sea, rock out-croppings and arroyos, Islands and coves, the sweeping horizon that embraces it, its proximity to close friends in the pueblo plus its other natural and cultural wonders.
