Excellent place and location for our family of five. Communication was great from beginning to end. The house had everything we needed. Would definitely stay here again.
We had an amazing time in Hilo and the house was perfect for our family. It is so charming and cute and remodeled beautifully. My favorite place was the front porch. It was perfect for drinking coffee while watching the sun rise. We met the owner of the house, and she was so great. She gave us recommendations for places to eat and where to go. She even rushed over to let us know the volcano was erupting and where to go to see the action. I would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Hilo and if we ever make it back we would book again.
Property was just as advertised!! Perfect for our family of four adults! Very comfortable with plenty of room to spread out.. newly remodeled bathrooms and kitchen were great!
Neighborhood was quiet and conveniently located… Beth provided great advice regarding the local attractions, trails, parks, beaches, what to see and avoid as well as other attractions on the island… her help was spot on and made our first trip to the Big Island very memorable… looking to return in the near future!
Pros:
* Great house, nicely decorated, clean
* Good location, quiet street
* Plenty of room for our group of 6
* Fantastic porch for morning coffee
* WiFi
Cons:
* Window coverings (at least in bedrooms) would be nice. It would be better to have the option to use them, needed or not.
* The hose to the shower head in the upstairs hall bathroom forces the head to spray along the wall at the shower door, making that shower useless.
Overall, a great place to stay. The cons are not deal breakers, and more just suggestions for improvement. We would definitely stay again.
We enjoyed the nostalgia of staying in an old plantation house. The neighborhood matched the home, quiet and quaint. It clean and the kitchen was very well stocked with everything that was needed.
Our extended family (7 adults) stayed in this wonderful plantation home while visiting Hilo in early October. We couldn't have been happier with the place.
My favorite things?
Plenty of room
Well stocked with towels, kitchen basics, etc.
Nicely updated kitchen and bathrooms with plenty of water pressure
Nice location - not far from Hilo, yet in a nice neighborhood.
Finally - we loved Hilo. We went to the Kohala Coast after (which we loved), but missed (a little) the authentic feel of Hilo. Thank you!!
Our family of 5 really enjoyed our stay at this property. Perfect location for exploring Hilo and taking advantage of local restaurants. Also a great base for exploring the volcano national park and the northeast section of the island. The home is charming with a beautiful kitchen and updated bathrooms. Only suggestion would be to add ceiling fans on the main living level - as they were very effective in cooling the bedrooms. Overall, really enjoyed our time in Hilo and would stay at this property again.

Hilo 2023, 5 night stay
The property has a beautiful location and the neighbors are wonderful.
The house itself needs some attention. There is black mold in the bedrooms. Almost all of the windows need to be replaced, there is room for bugs just to come in and out as they please. The termite swarms make it very unpleasant since the house isn’t sealed well.
The house wasn’t ready for us when we arrived either. It had dirty dishes in the sink, leftover food out, none of the bedrooms turned over.
We have passed all this on to the owners.
The house was clean and large to accommodate the group that was attending a Hilo Convention. Very spacious but the house was musty due to the dampness of the environment or weather of the area. As attempting to make it easier for us to attend the convention and that the owners were easy to contact to get my answers to my concerns that I had.
The house was as advertised. Spacious, bright and clean, renovated. Had the little extras like spices and laundry detergent. Good communication from the host. No AC, but fans in each room kept us sufficiently cool. Unfortunately, there was weird smell in the downstairs bedroom—not sure what it was but not ideal for my kids who stayed in there. Also, it was not a great place to walk or run from—no sidewalks or shoulder on the road out front (it’s down a steep embankment so you don’t notice the road much at all from the house).
Plantation house style was so beautifully renovated. We loved everything about it. The interior colors, the ambiance, the feeling you got when you walked in, the amenities provided... We just wish the neighbors next door didn't let their dog roam around unsupervised. She came on the porch in the back right up to the door and snooped around on the lanai, she pooped around on the property and my son stepped in it while walking his service dog. Not a good moment, as he always picks up after his dog. We did wish the master bathroom bathtub was cleaned because we would have loved to use it. There was soap scum and hair in it. The master shower had mold around the fixtures...otherwise the experience was a 9+! I would definitely recommend it to my friends and family.
This house was even better than the photos show. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms with high quality finishes (marble, live edge wood etc). Lots of sheets, towels and extra blow up beds if room configuration needs changing for your group. I highly recommend. My only request would be for curtains in the upstairs bedrooms as it gets light early.
Would definitely book again.
very nice, local style living house with tons of space and rooms. Really designed for group/families to get some time together and not just sit around a tv or something. Very central location in Hilo within minutes of many places to go. Onsite tenant in a separate house was super friendly and helpful. If you like a quiet location amongst the local community, this is the place.
During our trip to the island, we stayed in 3 rental homes (one in Kona, this home in Hilo and a resort condo just north of the airport).
What we loved about this home: 1) Being in Hilo. The town of Hilo has so much to offer. We loved the Hilo Friday night market (within walking distance), the Hilo farmers market (a must do experience), Carlsmith Beach Park, and Volcano National Park.
Getting to the volcano was easy from Hilo. A 45 min drive and we recommend going very early in the morning to see the lava before the huge crowds. We left the house by 4 am. There is a great map in the visitor book that has hand written notes on it that were very helpful in knowing where to go so early in the morning (thankful for Beth's recommendation on this).
We went to mass on Saturday evening at a tiny church (Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church) and it was a beautiful experience. We chose that church because it had Hawaiian music Sat. The people there were so incredibly welcoming to our family and gave us a small tour of the church and filled us in on the history of that church and its ties to Fr Damien (who we didn't know about but it is fascinating history).
Other places close by that we loved: Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and garden (a must see).
Restaurants we enjoyed: Mohala Bayfront Fish and Chips, The Seaside Restaurant and Aqua Farm, Cafe Pesto.
2) The bathrooms/kitchen in this home are very nicely updated.
3) The porch: I often sat outside with my coffee in the mornings.
Here are the things that I would point out that weren't clear in the listing. 1) The house is not air conditioned. Not at all a problem for us. The windows are open (even during rain) and the house was cool enough for us to be comfortable. The evening breeze was great and I enjoyed the sounds of the frogs at night and birds in the morning.
2) I somehow had the idea that the house was more remote than it was (maybe because one review stated that they walked to town daily and went through rainforests and by water falls). This house is in town and I would not describe the walk in that way.
3) The yard is very small and there are houses very close to this house on 3 sides.
4) The living room furniture no longer looks bright as in the picture. Same furniture and it is nice but it has been recovered in dark material so it didn't look as expected.
Overall: We loved this charming home as a base for experiencing Hilo and the surrounding attractions.
This phenomenal house was the perfect home base for our first adventure to the Big Island. It was airy and light, with the open windows letting in cool ocean air and the sound of softly falling rain most evenings. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking and even baking and the available beach towels saved us space in the luggage. The kids loved watching the geckos outside! From Hilo, we visited the farmers market, the botanic gardens, coconut island and Richardson’s beach, and Volcano national park. For kids, we enjoyed the Slow Your Roll game store and Makani’s Magic Pineapple Shack. All wonderful! We hope to be back! Thank you for a lovely stay.
We could not have been happier with our visit to Hilo. Able to stay four nights in this lovely home! Our weather was perfect (for Hilo). The home is situated within easy access to all the Hilo side of the big island has to offer. Just a short walk or 2 to 3 minute drive to downtown So many things to do on the Hilo side of the island and all are only a short drive away..
This is a beautiful older home in a nice quiet neighborhood. It has been meticulously maintained and beautifully updated. The most wonderful and unexpected surprise was the symphony of sounds between the birds during the day and the frogs at night. Not to mention the light rains. We could not have hoped for anything better, and would give six stars if we could. We definitely look forward to coming back. Mahalo!
We really did love this house; however, not having air conditioning was a issue for us as it was very hot and humid. The only other thing is the road noise at night can be a bit bothersome with all the windows being open.
There is plenty of seating to enjoy. The kitchen is fantastic. The property is really nice and easy to get to. It is close to downtown Hilo, but it feels far enough away. I really enjoyed this place.
