Also for your use are 4 kayaks, a paddle boat and 12' aluminum boat. The aluminum boat is built to accommodate mounting a trolling motor or 10 hp motor (motor not provided). The lake has three islands and miles of natural shoreline to explore.

The siting of the cottage, on a rock ledge that juts out into the lake affords breathtaking and beautiful water views on three sides. Constructed in 2011 on the footprint of the original fishing camp, the cottage is located in the heart of the Keweenaw. As such you can easily make day trips and hikes to all points of interest in the area. Come up and escape the summer heat! It is a relaxing drive up too!

Speaking of hiking - the lake is surrounded by miles of trails that radiate out from the lake in different directions. These can be accessed from lake Medora road, which loops around the East and North sides of the lake and from Washington Mine road which runs along the West area of the lake

ATV trails also abound in the area and provide access to beautiful woodlands and senic vistas, so bring them along.

Not for renter use is the workshop structure. It is used by the owner when we are at the site.

Amazing Lake Medora Retreat
This property was spectacular. The home was beautifully handcrafted by the owner. The attention to detail was truly amazing. There is lovely wood detail throughout the entire home, modern kitchen with excellent amenities, 2 nice sized, comfortable bedrooms and 2 baths. The home was spotlessly clean. The house is seated on a rocky outcropping on the east end of Lake Medora and it is quiet and peaceful. The owner was kind and thorough and provided all information needed for a perfect stay. This is a delightful home for a relaxing getaway in the Keeweenaw Peninsula. The location is perfect for traveling to local attractions. We would highly recommend this rental if you are in need of a perfect vacation. You will not be disappointed, as this home will meet all your needs.

Breathtaking view and cabin
We absolutely loved our stay here at the cabin. Not only it was beautiful and clean with amazing wood work but also easy to find, yet hidden paradise. We loved sitting at the bar watching the lake and the hummingbirds. Really enjoyed the sauna, it was a wonderful experience. We loved taking the paddle boat into the lake to watch the most magnificent Sunsets. I loved cooking and washing in the nice kitchen, watching the lake and the ducks. The cabin was close to Copper Harbor, Eagle River and Eagle Harbor making it easy to see amazing lighthouses and water falls. Loved seeing Stairs to the Beach, Brockway Mountain and Esrey Park along with many other beautiful areas. Thank you Carey for sharing your cabin with Us. We can’t wait to come back. John and Kathy

Awesome Home!
The home is situated right on the water with hummingbird feeders on the deck which attracts fearless hummingbirds that will literally buzz right next to you. The home has amazing woodwork that was obviously installed and finished by a master carpenter. The home is exceptionally clean, with a well equipped kitchen that is also supplied with gourmet coffee. There is plenty of firewood for both the firepit and the sauna. Communication with the owner was exceptional before and after arrival.

Copper Harbor Fishing & Rock Hunting Trip
Cary was an excellent host! He explained everything in detail and there wasn’t anything unexpected. Our fishing trip wasn’t the best due to an oddly warm year. But it was nice to come back to a cozy and clean cabin! The driveway was a little tight to try and get a bigger boat in. But made it work. Overall this was a great trip and a beautiful location to stay. Can’t get much closer to the water!

Exceptional Stay
This was a great spot for my wife and I while visiting Copper Harbor. Lake Medora was beautiful, perfect for a few kayak outings, and provided a brisk but accessible (unlike Superior) nightly pairing with the woodfired sauna. Cary was very responsive and more than flexible when we needed to adjust our arrangements. His home provides a high quality, unique experience on the lake just a few miles/minutes from town.

Quiet,cozy and peaceful getaway.
My wife and I always wanted to visit Copper Harbor Mi. We took a chance on the ten hour drive and it was well worth it. This cottage practically sits over the lake surrounded with a beautiful view. This solid well built cottage possess an abundance of charm in every room, revealing Cary the owners obvious wood working talents. It has everything you need with a well appointed kitchen. Be sure to visit the Brockway Mountain Drive for a breathtaking view of Lake Superior and the surrounding hills. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset at the highest point with a cup of coffee just minutes from the cottage. We also visited Fort Wilkins and the nearby Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. We took a day trip down to Hancock and toured the Quincy Copper mine and surounding area which we found interesting and informative. Cary the owner was extremely pleasant to work with and knowledgeable of the area. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway this is where you want to be. We hope to return there in the near future.

Our family had an amazing stay. The lodge and property are picture perfect. Lake Medora was described as one of the prettiest lakes in the Keweenaw by several locals. Everything was in good order and just as described in the listing. Cary was a fantastic host and always available , if needed. Thank you for sharing your home with us. We can't wait to visit again!

Plenty of room to watch whoever your chef is prepare dinner. Cottage overall is quite comfortable. The views of the lake and surrounding hills is very beautiful. No Surprises
A few items for future vacationers: the description of the cottage was accurate, clean, and since everything is either self explanatory or there is a note about it, we did not have to get hold of the owner or manager for anything. There are some things like spices and coffee left in the cottage that you will not have to buy. It may be a good idea to see what is in the cupboards before going out and buying items like salt-and-pepper, basil, garlic powder...etc. We did everything from kayaking to looking for agates on Lake Superior. We caught keeper size perch and small mouth bass (on Lake Medora) and had a great fish fry the following day. I could not rate my stay high enough. What a wonderful and reasonably priced place to spend an awesome vacation with my son and friends.

We had a fantastic week at this wonderful location
The owner is very helpful and ready to make your stay perfect. This is a great location for all the hiking, biking, and kayaking this area has to offer. We had two couples and we enjoyed the sunsets, the grill for cooking fresh whitefish from Jamson's fish market in Copper Harbor, as well as the quiet nights in a safe and secluded location. We'lll be back for sure!

Perfect base camp to explore from
This cottage on Lake Medora is a perfect place to stay for exploring the Keweenaw Peninsular. Copper Harbor is just a few miles away, Eagle Harbor, Lac la Belle, and Eagle River easily accessed by road as well. The cottage is well appointed with everything you need. Everything was obvious and "just there". No need to contact the owner or property manager while onsite. Owner is responsive to emails leading up to the stay if needed. The cottage is clean, usable, and beautiful. The area is itself is unique and beautiful. Thanks Cary. -Chris F.

Most Relaxing Vacation Ever
The perfect place for our week in the Keweenah. The cottage is immaculately maintained and has all the comforts of home. We made good use of the fully-appointed kitchen as well as the kayaks and paddle boat. We enjoyed leisurely morning coffee overlooking the lake, day trips to all the Keweenah sites, and nightly drives up Brockway Mountain to see the sunset. It was a wonderful week!

Great Place; Beautiful Setting
This is a terrific location from which to explore the whole keweenaw peninsula. The cottage is new and in great condition and was clean on arrival. The setting is great as well - right on the water. We were able to dock our boat right at the house and enjoy lake medora. We were able to easily explore lots of great locations from here: great sand bay, copper harbor, fort wilkins, lac la belle and bete gris bay, eagle harbor, etc. The owner was responsive and returned my communications and security deposit promptly. This is definitely a place I would come back to.

Beautiful, quiet cottage, on Lake Medora!
This was a fantastic home base for us while we explored the Peninsula. It's in a lovely location on beautiful Lake Medora, just 4 mi from Copper Harbor. The cottage has so much space for you and your friends/family, as compared to the smaller motel units in town. The Owner lets you use his boat toys to explore the Lake, right from your own little beach. We enjoyed feeding the ducks everyday, watching the hummingbirds, and the gorgeous sunsets. The area is so picturesque! Go see the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, Bete Gris Bay, bike the awesome mountain bike trails, enjoy the views from Brockway Mountain Drive, visit Fort Wilkins, get sweets at the Jampot, walk along Great Sand Bay, eat at Fitzgerald's & the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.....I could go on & on. The Owner provided great customer service to us - offered us a free night, returned our security deposit in a timely manner, and made sure we could always get ahold of him with questions/concerns. A couple of things for our next trip up; bring more cash! The local gas station & some gift shops don't take credit. Bring more fresh food. The local market has dry goods for sale, but not a lot for fresh food. Stop in Calumet on your way up...and then it's only 30 min. to the cottage from there. By all means, visit this area and stay at the Lake Medora cottage. You will love it, and wonder why more people haven't discovered this destination yet!

About the host

Like many people, I have a "bucket list". Besides travel with my family, I had dreamed of building my own lake cottage. Having fallen for Lake Medora many years earlier, it was serendipity when this site came on the market in 2008.

On May 2nd 2009 I arrived at the lake with a 29 foot U-Haul truck loaded to the rafters. The lake was still frozen over as the seven of us first converted the garage to my current work shop and bunk house. Once we began demolition of the old cottage I had to move out. So I spent six weeks living in the sauna while the workers who came up from Chicago bunked in the workshop.

During construction there was a two week period when the well was being pounded in. This made for a nice background cadence for us to work.

Why they chose this property

I had been shopping the lake for many years before this spot came along. Initially there was no power on the lake, so you had to have a noisy generator on when you wanted light, and needed a propane refrigerator. This was a big deterrent to a city boy like me. Also at that time the cottages built along Lake Medora Rd were on Leased land. This was another deterrent - not owning the land under your camp.

In the early 2000's the land company sold the lots to cottage owners and they started selling off lake front lots too.
I looked at many of these but they were so far down the road that I was afraid of being greeted by Black Bears in the morning or at night.

There were always costly issues you had to face if you were going to build on a greenfield site - clearing, power and septic were all costly first steps.

Finally in 2008 I was "in the right place" in life, when the old cottage came on the market. I had been shopping the lake for many years and when this spot came along I jumped on it.

I could see it had an outstanding perspective on the waters edge, and the price was affordable too.

The local contractors still claim that the demolition here was on their top ten list - for the most bat guano that came out of the rafters during demolition.

It is hard to describe how satisfying it was to spend six months along the edge of the water building the cottage. It was truly one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

What makes this property unique

The atmosphere inside the cottage is one where you are continuiously exposed to views of the water in three directions.

During the daytime the ceilings are "painted" with shimmering light reflecting off the lake. This adds a unique dimension to the cottage interior.

The clear area around the cottage, and the open exposure to the West brings fresh air and breezes that also keep the site relatively free of flies.
