I'm giving this house 4 stars because I can't select half stars. Real rating would probably be a 3.5.
I've read many reviews for this house, both on the rental site and other sites where it's offered for rent (VRBO, AirBnB). I also stalked the house on google maps. I was nervous to say the least, but I'm hoping my review will help others.
I have been coming to Anna Maria since the late 90s and previously stayed at my grandparents house. This house felt just like that - dated, stuffy/moldy smell, odd furniture choices that I imagine my grandparents would have also chosen. None of that bothered me because 1. I'm used to it, and 2. Most of our time was spent on the beach, not in the house. The house was above our budget, but even with the dated feel of the house, I'm still glad we chose it.
This house was perfect for this stage of our lives. We have a 9 month old (and a 5 yr old) who needed lots of naps and it was so nice to be able to put the baby down, bring out the monitor, and still enjoy the beach. The water here is calm and beautiful so we could also bring the baby out without getting knocked down by waves.
The actual beach is maybe about 15 feet deep (depending on the tide). There is a sea wall that adds some seating space, but it's sand on top of a cement shelf, so not actually the beach. We rented a canopy since we have young kids, but there wasn't much space for it. We had to perch the canopy half on the beach and half on the sea wall. The property has a large tree next to the beach that gives a perfect shady spot, but you still get plenty of sun as well. That tree was an ideal situation - I hope they never remove it lol!
There is a beach access point right next to the house, but maybe 1 or 2 small families would come by per day, and occasionally a couple would sit on the bench to watch the sun/ocean. It was not an issue at all. People do park in front of the house, but there are large trees and bushes that provide privacy.
The rod n reel is much closer than the pictures suggest. Bayfront Park is also a quick 5 minute walk along the beach. There is a swing set and picnic tables at Bayfront Park, but honestly I didn't see the point in going there since the beach isn't much different than the one at the house. We did take trips to bean point/holmes beach since those have the soft white sand that I love and you can watch the sunset from that side of the island. The sand at the house has a lot of shells - not the soft sand. For shell collectors, it's awesome. The house even has a shell rake.
You can watch the sunrise from the house. We saw a dolphin on day 2 and a manatee and dolphin on day 5. At night you can see the Skyway Bridge lit up and watch storms that roll in from the sunroom. The house had 2 working beach chairs and 1 broken, but usable, beach chair. There were also 2 camping chairs and beach towels were provided. The agency recommends fun and more rentals, but we found that Just 4 Fun beach rentals was a better deal for beach supplies.
The bedrooms are all in the back of the house. They are dark - perfect for daytime naps for kids. I also liked the bedroom with the three beds as it was brighter, private, and you could glimpse the beach from one of those windows. The beds are super soft. I have a bad back, so I was a bit crippled by them but they were still comfy.
One of the three bathrooms has a bathtub. I couldn't tell from the pictures, so I thought I would mention it. My son LOATHES showers so we prepared him that he would have to take showers on vacation. Needless to say, the tub was a nice surprise. However, it's not without issues as it has a glass door and the faucet is next to the toilet. For adults - no big deal. When giving a 5 year old and a 9 month old a bath, its not fun to squeeze between the toilet and the glass door to wash away soap before it gets in their eyes.
I've read responses from the rental agency on negative reviews and a renovation appears to be in the works. Below are some improvements that the owner could make based on our experience (outside of the obvious renovation work needed - e.g., updated appliances, bathroom updates, updated ventilation system for the mold situation):
-Add febreeze plug-ins throughout the house to diminish that moldy smell
-Add high top tables in the sunroom so you can see more of the water over the bushes (the bushes are nice because it provides added privacy)
-Add an enclosure for the outside shower - maybe change its location so there is room to do that.
-Get a better patio furniture set for the deck
-Add another sofa for the living room
-It looks like a beach wagon was purchased for the house, but the box for it was empty. That would be a great addition for renters. Same comment for having some baby/children supplies in the house.
-Larger improvement - consider adding a door to the sunroom to get outside.
One comment for the rental agency - the suggestion to mail the rental money to a PO Box made me nervous that the rental was a scam. I paid the cc fee because I was too nervous about mailing a check. I honestly worried it was a scam up until the moment I put the code in the front door and it worked. In this day and age, the mailing/cc fee is archaic. To those that are also nervous, it was not a scam and we saw the agency with our own eyes while driving around, so it does exist lol!!
