Costa Rica vacation rentals: there are hundreds to choose from. Yet we are told again and again that Casa Pina and our other bamboo beach houses are exceptional. So if you're ready to take a walk on the wild side, this is the place! This Costa Rica beach rental offers nature lovers an ideal vacation. It sits on a beautiful beach, in the rainforest, on the coast of the Osa Peninsula. This unique setting lets you experience the true Costa Rica, one of the most amazing areas on earth; relax on the beach; and enjoy countless natural wonders. All this while keeping you comfortable and secure in a private rental house on the beach. At Casa Pina the ocean waves lull you to sleep and the roar of the howler monkeys awaken you to a glorious sunrise over the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf). A pristine beach is literally steps away, and the rainforest and wildlife are all around. If you love nature in all its wild beauty, this is the place for you.

After visiting vacation rentals around the country, Lonely Planet's Costa Rica recommends Casa Pina as a place to stay. Men's Journal touts Casa Pina in its review of Costa Rica vacation homes in its vacation guide cover story How to Rent a Dream House Anywhere: Your Own Private Resort. It says: “For the jungle experience, visit the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica’s wild southern appendage. Its few paved roads lead to tiny fishing villages, like Cabo Matapalo, where you’ll find unspoiled beaches and rental houses like Casa Pina on a plot of pristine rainforest teeming with monkeys.” The Denver Post Travel section featured Casa Pina in an article about Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula and Matapalo. The Fine Living Channel included Casa Pina in its program Around the World in Eighty Houses, which focused on remarkable vacation houses throughout the world, including Casa Pina. The Sunday Post of Scotland, an international publication, featured an article by a Casa Pina guest about her vacation with us.

Our Costa Rica beach house rentals offer:

A perfect location: right on a gorgeous beach (and near several others), with a spectacular view, in the rainforest, surrounded by abundant wildlife and scenery.
A handcrafted, clean and safe vacation rental home, from which to enjoy your fantastic surroundings.
Many activities for the whole family.
Three other bamboo rentals, equally wonderful.
When natives of Costa Rica greet each other, they often say “Pura Vida,” or pure life. When you visit Casa Pina, you’ll truly understand what this means

Jungle Beauty!

Great stay! Super clean, everything we needed in a simple kitchen. Beds cozy. Wildlife all around, sliver of ocean view/sunrise and 3 min walk to swimming beach. Surf breaks up and down coast. Some traffic noise because of loud motorcycles & backfiring cars :), but mostly quiet after dark. Utilized William for tours & Leda for meals- both very talented. Used the walkie-talkie to communicate with office and for making reservations with Lapa Rios (birdwatching) & Encanta La Vida (dinner) Space for everyone. Wouldn't have minded another sitting (cushioned) chair in the master bedroom and lower bedrooms for private chill time. Cold showers inside and out were very welcome. Loud thunderstorms at night and howler monkeys made the stay electric and alive!

We had a great time!

From the first day of reserving this property, Kirk and Elena were so helpful in providing information and answering our questions. They responded quickly. The property is lovely, comfortable, and safe. William is a great tour guide. The boat ride with Capt Josh was well worth the time and money. Everyone in our group had a great time and would come back again. This property is a gem, and the hosts are great people!

Slice of heaven

The house was perfect for our 2-family group. The wildlife on the property is amazing--monkeys galore, exotic birds, a beautiful weasel called a tayra, an armadillo, and even a sloth. The house was clean and had everything we needed. Kirk and his manager William were both very responsive and helpful. William is very knowledgeable about the local wildlife. He took us to Corcovado, and as a special bonus, to see a rare potoo bird. Would definitely recommend for the adventurous traveler!

We loved staying in the Bamboo Casa Pina, everything as described and more! The abundance of monkeys, fireflies, bird life, butterflies and more! Clean and neat accommodation, great staff, (especially William the guide on our hike) informative and great attention to detail. Highly recommend this place!

This spot was an absolute find! My wife, 16 yr old daughter and I reserved Casa Pina for 5 days. We loved it so much we stayed another 4 days and extended our entire trip to Costa Rica by a week. Well, nothing compared to Kirks place for the true Costa Rica experience. We were warmly greeted by William, man of many talents and an excellent tour guide to Corcovado National park. There are Kayaks and boogie boards for use,it is not at all that far from Puerto Jimenez down a rather bumpy but great road. We are from the mountains of Virginia so it did not bother us at all. Kirk had a vision in the mid nineties, found 6 acres of land and planted many many trees to reintroduce local species of wildlife, scarlet Macaws and monkeys and lizards abound. You will wake to the sound of howler monkeys and we saw three of the four species of Monkeys right from the deck of the bamboo house. There are four on the property and laid out so that you are never cramped up with the other( minimal ) guests. I cannot say enough about this property and can't wait to get back. Fabulous!! Thank you Kirk and William, the Osa captured our hearts and souls

Incredible stay, beach and jungle

Having never been to Costa Rica we didn't know what to expect. We were blown away. after a 40 or so minute drive from Puerto Jimenez past well kept ranches and glimpses of the Gulf we arrived at our Casa Pina. William the caretaker met us and let us in and described all the ins and outs of the place. It is fully run on solar. a short walk and you are at an incredible beach. We saw most every type of monkey species from the porch' big birds abound of many species. William is a perfect guide for Corcovado National park. please brush up on your Spanish as this is a Spanish speaking country and you need to know a bit to get the most out of your trip. regardless we saw two Tapir' and so much more. Kirk the owner had a vision in the mid 90s and has more than fulfilled that goal. We loved it so much we extended our stay in the country another week!!! We loved it and can't wait to get back. There is sooooo much to do and the Osa and Kirk's place have captured our heart

This house was amazing. We will be back!

Casa Piña was exactly what we had hoped for- an open air house with wildlife right in the backyard. The size was perfect for the 5 of us with a good sized kitchen, dining table, and comfortable beds. The house was very clean. The best part was the porch where we could enjoy the monkeys and birds. We also appreciated all of Kirk’s recommendations for activities, hotel in San Jose, rental car, etc . William was helpful and gave a great tour of Corcovado. If you are looking to get away and enjoy quiet and nature, this is the place for you.

Perfect House for our Osa Adventure

We just returned from a fabulous stay in Casa Pina with our family of 5 – kids ages 9, 8, and 4. This looks like the first review for this house but you can actually find others under ‘Casa Bambu’ here and TripAdvisor. The location is absolutely beautiful with the perfect combination of jungle and beach. Our favorite part of the house was the open air living room and that's where we spent most of our time. We really enjoyed watching all the wildlife at Casa Pina from our front deck/living room. Casa Pina seems to be situated right on a main corridor for the monkeys so we were able to see many of them travel across throughout the day and take huge leaps from tree to tree. During our stay, we saw most of the wildlife not from our hikes but from our own home including scarlet macaws…my boys loved the iguana, bats, and hermit crabs too. One of our favorite parts was the sounds of the jungle…we woke up to the sounds of howler monkeys, birds, and waves and went to bed with frogs, cicadas, and (of course) waves. I think that is what I missed the most my first morning back at our house in California. I had planned on having the ladies cook for us each night but after a bit in Costa Rica, my boys begged me to cook some of the dishes we eat at home. I cook a lot so it was fun for me to get hands on and experience cooking in the jungle. But after 3 days of cooking, I think I appreciated the ladies even more. I was surprised that as soon as the meal was set on the table, dishes were already done and kitchen was spotless! That allowed lots of extra time on those nights for reading, playing cards, etc. The kitchen had everything we needed. Kirk helped us arrange tours including horseback ride with waterfall & tree climb, dolphin boat tour, and Osa Palmas canopy tour. We loved them all but the horseback ride with the highlight of our Costa Rica trip for my kids. We were glad we rented a car because we had more flexibility to explore the area, go back to the store once, and try local restaurants. We had a wonderful time and hope we can make it back to Casa Pina one day!

About the host

Hosted by Kirk Ulbricht

Host profile image
Twenty-seven years ago, while visiting friends on the Osa Peninsula, Kirk found his heaven. He bought six acres of overgrown cow pasture by the Golfo Dulce, cleared it of brambles and weeds, and began to transform it. With neighbors, they planted 1,000 trees (now part of the monkey trail) and built Casa Bambu with the help of local friends. Kirk completed a second bamboo house, Casa Linda, in September, 2002; a third, Casa Piña, in August, 2003; and a fourth, Casa Sonrisa, in December, 2007. All the houses are solar-powered with artesian wells, beautiful tropical yards and on a pristine beach.
Back in the U.S. Kirk has been a 'green' builder and home designer in Austin, TX. His houses are ultra efficient - utilizing passive solar techniques, proper siting and other applications that conserve energy while providing comfortable shelter. His heart, however, is in Costa Rica, where he relishes life in the rainforest and can fulfill his lifelong love of the sea.
