About this property
The Old Chaff Mill Organic Vineyard Retreat McLaren Vale
Nestled amongst organic Shiraz vineyards where the McLaren Vale foothills meet the ocean, the Old Chaff Mill Retreat dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when it provided grains and chaff to bullock teams as they hauled their mighty loads across the picturesque countryside. Gutted by fire a century ago, the building has been architecturally restored with a stunning modern fitout celebrating its rich past, to provide a unique luxury accommodation experience.
The Chaff Mill comprises two delux, double-story, self-contained suites with plush king beds and spectacular bathrooms with double rain-head showers: “The Millery” and “The Granary”. Each suite is unique, and can be sealed off for complete privacy by soundproof, lockable double fire doors. They can be rented separately or together.
This listing is for “The Granary” suite. If you would like to know more about “The Millery”, go to: https://www.homeaway.com.au/holiday-rental/p9508693?uni_id=8588250
“The Granary” is approx 90 m2, with sweeping vistas to vineyards and hills from a Juliette balcony and stunning first-storey bathroom, and accommodates two in a plush king bed. The kitchen is fully equipped with European appliances, and includes a gorgeous lit glass floor display right under your breakfast table, of artefacts dug out during restoration, while the walls around you contain secret mortar inscriptions from the building’s original stonemasons. The space also has an amazing chaff chute covered in century-old graffiti- now the pantry door.
(“The Millery” is 120 m2 with a combustion stove, a restored century-old cast-iron claw foot outdoor bath (bathe under the stars!), and a sound system featuring a retro LP player and vinyl records. It also has a king bed for two, and a comfortable sofa bed in the sitting area that can accommodate an additional two people at $75 per person per night.)
The suites are nestled into their own sweeping lawns, and have access to a secluded BBQ area complete with fishpond and fountain to while away long summer nights.
Have a relaxing massage in our onsite beauty salon, or a treatment package for your day to remember (https://hiddenbeautysellicks.com/) - prebookings are advised.
Afterwards, drive just 5 minutes down the road and straight onto the glorious white sands of our world-renowned beaches. Alternately you can take a joy flight in a Tiger Moth biplane at nearby Aldinga Aerodrome, or go whale spotting at Victor Harbor, just 30 minutes away. With some of McLaren Vale’s best wineries, scenic attractions and restaurants at your doorstep, you'll wish you never had to leave!

About the host
Hosted by Richard Jasek

As artists from film, television and theatre, we love meeting new people and giving them special memories. Richard has worked as a television producer and director on iconic shows ranging from "Neighbours" to "McLeods Daughters", and Bernice has transitioned from costume designer to beauty therapist. Having traveled widely before discovering the Fleurieu Peninsula 15 years ago, we look forward to sharing with you the secrets of one of the world's most beautiful areas.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the Chaff Mill from the moment we first saw it, and dreamed of restoring it. Little did we know it would be nearly a decade before we could begin, and then the restoration would take six long years! Builders and sensible people told us to simply knock it down and use the stones for something else. But as artists we couldn’t let the building die and take its stories with it. Now a Phoenix reborn from its century-old ashes, the Chaff Mill’s stories are something we love to offer to you.
What makes this property unique
It’s utterly unique, and just a lovely place to stay- see a few of our reviews on Google.
