About this property

A quaint and crooked Cornish cottage

This is a cottage we bought in October 2020. We had many holidays cancelled through COVID and decided instead to explore our own backyard. We arrived in Moonta, fell instantly in love with its history and beautiful beaches and on spec bought this little cottage with our hearts instead of our heads! We loved that it was situated within an old cornish mining village and that the beach was just 5 minutes drive away.

The cottage sits back on its own surrounded by grass and native trees. It is fully fenced with views from the cottage variously of the setting sun, old mining buildings and a large original Methodist church built at about the same time as the cottage which is approximately 1860. Just a little bit further and within walking distance is a lovely old sweet shop, a railway station that runs a miniature train ride around the old mine site and the Moonta Mines Museum which was the old Moonta Mines school.

However we had inadvertently taken on a huge task and the cottage needed a great deal of work to make it habitable. It became quite plain after we started to unearth the cottages history and previous owners that little by way of maintenance had been done for the last 20 years. Prior to that it literally was a very basic dwelling with an outside toilet. So we got the tradies in and replastered, repainted and refurnished the whole house in about 3 months.

We have brought much of our own furniture and antiques to the cottage from where we live in the Adelaide Hills. We have also spent many hours trawling through the local antique shops, buying old furniture, sanding and varnishing and repurposing as many items as possible. The TV tables in the first two lounges as you walk through the door are a case in point.

The cottage with its three lounge areas and two bedrooms will ideally suit couples but is also great for young families because of the enclosed yard and space to explore the surrounding area on foot. There is a queen bed in one bedroom and a double bed with a single bed in the other bedroom.

There is an embarrassingly and excruciatingly small and dated toilet and shower area. It was originally just a shower but a sink and inside toilet was installed a generation ago.
We eventually along with all our other grand plans want to build a slightly more commodious and luxurious bathroom. Please bear with us until we upgrade and I hope you don't find the bathroom experience too difficult.

We have poured our heart and soul into the renovation but have much more to achieve. We have kept the price and cleaning fee reasonable so that you feel you can come and stay. We are constantly improving and maintaining the property and surrounding garden. It is always well cared for and scrupulously clean.

We cherish our little cottage steeped in history and testament to the ravages of time with leaning walls, tiny door frames, sloping floors, crooked chimneys, original packing wood floorboards, cotton reel handles on kitchen cupboards and much more. The framed letter and picture above the mantelpiece in the kitchen details the owners of yesteryear.

Quiet is a word that defines the immediate surrounds of our cottage and the space to imagine the hard worn lives of the original inhabitants. Your stay will hopefully be less arduous with the opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine, watch a Netflix movie or just marvel at the sun disappearing over the horizon as you sit under the front verandah.

Thank you for staying and we hope you enjoy this little cottage with all of its idiosyncrasies.

PLEASE BRING OWN SHEETS, PILLOW CASES AND BATH MATS, THANKYOU.

Cousin Jacks
This little gem of a place is cosy, comfortable and enough space for 5 people to share. It was just me and my husband for a weekend getaway and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The property is spotlessly clean. Has everything you need (bring own sheets, pillow cases and towels) Loved the location. Very quiet and peaceful.

A trip back to yesteryear
Very quaint and comfortable cottage, exceptionally clean and comfortable. Lovely quiet location, with easy access to everything. Only downside is bathroom (smelly drains and very small) however I believe owners a planning a refurb of bathroom. We would definitely stay again 💕

Quaint, well-appointed historic cottage
There are many "historic" cottages dotted around Australia, but this might be one of the oldest - lovingly renovated and restored without detracting from (in fact adding to) its charm. More than 160 years old, with some strange un-eveness to floors and ceilings, it has what is, to modern eyes, an unusual or counter-intuitive layout of its rooms, but is very well equipped and decorated with period furniture and artefacts.

Moonta mines perfect to learn pioneer history.
This beautiful area and wonderful house suited all our needs. In fact exceeded what we expected. I wish we had been able to stay longer both to enjoy the house and to explore the area.

Lovely cottage
I only stayed one night but it was a lovely character filled cottage with lots of lovely antique items to look at. Amenities were fine. Small bathroom, but everything worked and great hot water. Nice quiet place to stay in a historic area a stones throw from Moonta, Wallaroo and Kadina.

Would like to say that the Cottage was lovely it had everything we needed it was very clean and tidy. But sorry to have to say this but the smell from the toilet was overwhelming my husband was the only one that used the shower. Myself my sister inlaw and my brother could not have a shower in there as we could not stand the smell for that long. My husband is a plumber and said that it needs to vented on the outside. Sorry to to tell you this but i feel that i had to i am not a person to complain but if people dont tell you ,you would never know.

Cute cottage stay
Interesting cottage with old knick-knacks, comfortable with all that we needed. Has DVDs as well for rainy days, though we didn't need them as there was plenty to do in the area. The septic system is a little smelly.

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!
10/10! This quirky little cottage is absolutely perfect for a quiet but amazing getaway. It's old timey charm and decor makes you feel right at home. Our highly Autistic Son is usually very on edge during vacations as it throws out his surroundings and routines, however he absolutely loved staying here and didn't want to leave! We highly recommend this quirky little cottage to everyone!

I'm not very good at talking about myself, probably the wrong generation for all that self promotion!! Suffice to say buying our little cottage in Moonta has been one of the best things my husband and I have done and it is a wonderful place to come and spend some time in. I'm of course a little biased!!

Why they chose this property

This property was something that reminded us of our heritage. It was as if we were buying a little piece of England in Australia.

What makes this property unique

It's just different. It's not a place literally on the beach but not far away all the same. It's not a modern beach house but it has present day amenities as well as traditional comforts. It is a nod to nostalgia and previous lives. A place to remember people gone by and the context of their lives. A place to contrast and compare the then and the now. A rich and privileged opportunity to remember.....
