About this property

Tiberius - Hilltop Medieval Escape with Panoramic View

Casa Spello's convenient location in the heart of the historic center and its outstanding panoramic views are what makes this historic medieval property one of the most desirable in the region.

Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

Casa Spello was restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Originally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio mountain.

This large 3 bedroom / 2 bath stone unit is on two levels, and sleeps up to 6. The Tiberius apartment used to house the family’s “cantina” where the family used to make wine and press olive oil. All bedrooms have great views. The apartment is elegantly furnished with antique-style and rustic furnishings, and has a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking pleasure.

Beautifully furnished, with original vaulted ceiling, Tiberius is the “hidden treasure of Spello.” For larger parties, the Augustus (1 BR, sleeps 4) and Tiberius (3 BR, sleeps 6) apartments can be opened to each other. The Tiberius apartment has street access to the garden.

Beautiful and romantic

The apartment is beautiful and it is within the romantic walled city of Spello. It is a long walk to your car, as expected within a walled city. Two minor issues were the water heater kept shutting off and the television never worked.

Wonderful apartment in Spello!

Our family of 6 stayed in the Tiberius apartment of Casa Spello in August, 2018. It was a perfect place to enjoy magical Spello. Very clean, lots of room, and a perfect location! We could not get over the beauty of Spello - wherever you looked. Wonderful restaurants, shops and so much to do. The only issue we had was that the AC unit in one bedroom leaked some water one night. The bathrooms were great with strong water pressure! The apartment is unique and up-to-date. Overall we had a memorable experience!!

Wonderful spacious apt in the beautiful Spello

We absolutely adored this apartment. Plenty of room for 2 couples, each couple having our on bathroom. Kitchen was supplied with the necessities to prepare simple meals. Wonderful place to relax inside, and also having a patio that overlooked the surrounding areas while enjoying a glass of wine (or two). Gina happened to be there when we were and arranged for us to attend a wine and food pairing at a nearby winery. What a treat! The town of Spello itself is charming and great restaurants are a short walk from the apt. We highly recommend you spend some time here.

The real Italy

We stayed at Casa Spello for one month. Signora Gina was very helpful with organising our trip and had many suggestions for outings. The Tiberius apt is very spacious and has a lovely view of the valley. I particularly liked walking a few steps down to the park bench to view the sunset and enjoy a cup of tea. The garden and terrace also became a place to enjoy lunches that extended into dinner. The garden space is a big plus as Spello is all stone alleys and apartments, so garden space is rare. Gina organised some lovely activities while we were at Casa Spello which we thoroughly enjoyed. My children were welcomed and thoroughly spoilt with cookies. The location is great and the apartment is large and has everything you need. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking for your family. Grazie Signora Gina for your hospitality

Location, location, location

Casa Spello is located in the midst of the old town restaurant area in the most charming town of Umbria. We were here seven nights and enjoyed our stay without any unfixable problems. Nadia, our greeter, was an important part of our success. She met us on time, helped with parking, hauled luggage over the medieval hilly streets, and came immediately to our aid at night when the hot water heater malfunctioned. The apartment was clean and matched the photos. The air conditioning worked. The negative is that there are only three small windows. One for each upstairs bedroom, and one for the downstairs bedroom which opens directly onto the street, only a couple of feet from the bed. There is plenty of lighting, but the apartment can feel gloomy and claustrophobic to those who would like to see out while in the kitchen or living room. In all we enjoyed our stay and recommend Casa Spello.

Our stay in Spello

The apartment was very nice and Nadia is very helpful. The only negatives are it’s a bit dark and the AC is nothing like AC in the US. Thankfully there were fans and ceiling fans.

Unique Well Stocked Apartment in Beautiful Spello

We loved the town of Spello and this location is right in the heart of it. The apartment had plenty of space for 5 of us. So glad to have 2 full bathrooms. It’s a very unique space with stone walls curved ceiling, stairs up to the kitchen and 2 of the bedrooms, and well stocked in kitchen and bathrooms. The main area is a bit dark but has nice lighting throughout. The bedroom with the 2 twin beds is very small, but it does have a nice window with view. The garden/terrace with view is reached by going out the front door, down the walkway and through a gate. Very lovely. Nice to have access to a washing machine, though we didn’t have a drying rack so used clothes line outside on the terrace. The town of Spello has so many great restaurant choices, Market day on Wednesday, and most shops you need are on the main square near the apartment. Gina was very helpful with recommendations, gave us the name of taxi service to help us get to apartment from train station, and Nadia had a parking pass for us when we got our rental car, with a lot just a block from the nearby piazza.

Outstanding apartment, perfect vacation rental.

This apartment met all of our expectations, it was well maintained, it had everything we needed and it was perfect location. We were especially impressed by the information provided by the owner, Gina Waldman, prior to our arrival, i.e., shopping restaurants, sights, everything we needed to know to make our stay comfortable. The Manager, Nadia, greeted us on our arrival and she was so helpful. If you want to stay in a very authentic apartment in a charming hill town, like Spello, this is your place.

Amazing location

The Tiberious apartment is located in a small medieval and very picturesque village called Spello (it is not in the immediate center but on the top of a hill so expect a bit of a hike to get there ). The apartment is quite spacious and can welcome at least two couples and two/three kids (there are two big beds and three small beds). The rooms on the second floor have a beautifull view on the valley. While the living room and the kitchen are a bit dark, the apartment offers all the amenities needed including washing machines, dishwasher, bedding and towels. The kitchen is very functional. Gina is a very caring owner and will provide you with all the details needed to have a wonderful experience, including tips on what to do in Umbria. Nadia will welcome you for the check-in. She is lovely and ready to help you with all the information you would need for the house. Gina can also provide a parkimg permit. Spello is an amazing village with a charming atmosphere . There are plenty of restaurants and bars. I would strongly recommend Gina’s apartment.

Authentic Italy in Spello

We have been to Italy many times and specifically wanted to be in Spello for the annual “Infiorate” flower festival that is one of the best known festivals for the religious feast of Corpus Domini. We chose to stay in town and Casa Spello(The Tiberious apartment) was our home for the week. What a fantastic place, restored meticulously, on a quiet street at the top of the town. Gina, the owner of the property, provided a wealth of information about the town, local itineraries and restaurants. She also planned for the guests in the 4 apartments an evening at a fabulous restaurant in the hills above Spello in a little town called Collepino. The owners are local and we fested on freshly farmed porcini mushrooms with pasta, grilled meats and local wines. Casa Spello also has a beautiful garden overlooking the valley and it provides guests a great place to enjoy an aperativo or dinner. We chose to buy local truffles and shave them on strangozzi pasta with local olive oil, dining alfresco. Spello provides a central point to local attractions like Perugia, Assisi, Bevagna and Montefalco. For wine lovers, there isnothing better than a great Sagrantino and the beautiful vineyards are just 15 minutes away. Right around the corner from Casa Spello is a great spot for coffee called Bar Tullia. We spent every morning there having a cappuccino watching the local kids come to school which is right next door. Casa Spello is a remarkable find in one of Umbria’s most charming hill towns, made all the better by Gina, an owner with a love and passion for Italy.

Lovely, comfortable apartment for visiting Umbria

We are four friends who rented the Tiberius apartment in Casa Spello for 10 nights in April. Spello is a charming, not too touristy hill town that is convenient for day trips all over Umbria. This 3 BR, 2 bath apartment worked well for us. It is immaculate and comfortably furnished, on a quiet street with views over the valley below from the two upstairs bedrooms. The owner has a local manager who was extremely friendly and helpful and responded quickly the times we needed help with something. The owner provided a list of local recommended restaurants, and we liked every one of them that we visited. Every restaurant in Spello treated us well, and the ones we returned to for a second or third time welcomed us like family. Spello is a hill town, and that means there are plenty of uphill and downhill streets, so you do need to be able to walk. The owner gave us a parking permit for the locals' lot near the center of town, which made parking easy. Umbria is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, and Casa Spello is a wonderful retreat for visiting it. Highly recommend!

Outstanding

We have just returned from a three week stay at Casa Spello located in Spello Umbria. It was everything as described in the web site and much more. The owner Gina and her husband Dan went out of their way to insure that our stay was perfect, and it was. The location was excellent, centrally located in Spello with numerous shops, restaurants, bank, pharmacy and food store nearby. Our apartment, Tiberius, was spacious with three bedrooms and two baths and the entire apartment was beautifully decorated and equipped. It had a wonderful Medieval feel but with all the modern amenities. And the views were spectacular both from the bedrooms and the beautiful garden. If you are planning a vacation to Italy, I highly recommend Spello and most definitely Casa Spello. Thank you Gina and Dan for a wonderful vacation.

Perfect in every way!

We spent two months in the charming and welcoming town of Spello and the Tiberius apartment was a wonderful home away from home. It is spacious, with two full bathrooms, and lots room for three couples. Excellent shops and restaurants are an easy walk away and the parking, located just outside the city walls is accessible (10 min walk). The garden is wonderfully private and dinner on the terrace was almost a nightly affair. Nadia look after our every need. This area of Umbria is full of charm and interesting things to do. From truffle hunting to olive picking, cooking lessons to cycling, art galleries to festivals, you will never be bored. Thank you Gina! We hope to be back

The House is welcoming, clean and comfortable. except For the fact of being in a historical place, i felt Like being At home. There is everything you need and the People that rent and manage the House are kind, welcoming, open, friendly and ready to satisfy all needs. Not to mention the garden, which is Perfect For relaxing, Reading, writing, meditating, playing if you have Kids (mine really enjoyed picking fruits and looking For snail or stones or playing hide-and-seek).

Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful time in the Tiberius Unit of Casa Spello. Because of its thick walls and blinds, it was cool during the warm weather. The combination of the new interior with the ancient cave-like walls made it a very special place. Our reception was very friendly and after unloading our luggage, we were directed to a perfect free parking space well within walking distance. Spello is a beautiful town with many narrow streets and steps to discover. And after that, there are several very nice restaurants to eat in. The owner provided us with good tips for trips in the area. Spello is near many sights in Umbria. So many things to see that we did not have enough time to visit them all. Highly recommended!

Lovely apartment; excellent location

Casa Spello is a wonderful apartment accommodation in beautiful Spello. We were three couples traveling together and the apartment was more than adequate to accommodate us. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. The kitchen and living areas were generous and we never felt cramped or crowded. Spello is a lovely town and within 15-20 minutes of Perugia and Assisi. It is not noisy or crowded and was a nice oasis to return to after long days of touring some of the more "touristy" towns. Gina, the owner, happened to be there during our stay, and she gave us some excellent recommendations for restaurants and bakeries in town. She was very helpful and is really knowledgeable about the town and the surrounding area. Even if she is not on the property, she has lots of written information and suggestions for places to go and things to do both in Spello and the area. We loved our time at Casa Spello and would happily return.

About the host

Hosted by Gina Waldman

Host profile image
I am a human rights advocate. I live in San Francisco, California. I have been awarded several prizes for my human rights work. The work I do for human rights is pro-bono. My husband and I travel all over the world. I speak English, Italian, Francais, Espanol and I love hosting people from all over the world in my Casa Spello. I have family in Italy and family in the USA. My husband Dan has a property management company based in San Francisco, but he lets me manage Casa Spello. He is also involved in civil rights causes and served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in India for two years. Of course when I have serious issues with Casa Spello regarding a frozen pipe or anything to do with the building, I consult with him. But I deal with all the bureaucracy in the Italian government offices.

Casa Spello for us is a "labor of love" and a pride of ownership.

Why they chose this property

My husband Dan and I bought this property because we fell in love with its magnificent views and the fact that it was built in hand carved stones from the nearby Subasio Mountains.

Spello took us under its spell and in fact this medieval villas has recently been declared by Smarter Travel as one of 11 of the most beautiful secret villages in Italy.

What makes this property unique

The property offers breathtaking sunsets from our windows and sweeping views from our beautiful garden. Sunset watching in our garden enjoying a glass of local wine and an appetizer is a must and this is what our guests love the most. The inside of the units are in hand carved peach color stone which gives the interior a warm glow. This warm soft light creates a very romantic atmosphere.
