About this property

Cleopatra - Hilltop Medieval Escape with Panoramic View

Casa Spello's convenient location in the heart of the historic center and its outstanding panoramic views are what makes this historic medieval property one of the most desirable in the region.

Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

Casa Spello was restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Originally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio mountain.

The Cleopatra apartment sleeps up to 4, two in double bed and two in couch. This unit is as intriguing as its name; it is a “monolocale” - one large open space which comprises a bedroom and living room space – a small kitchenette complete with most amenities – a small dining room area. The ceiling in the green tiled bathroom is carved into the rock. A second apartment doorway gives direct access to the garden.

For larger parties, the Mark Anthony (1 BR, sleeps 4) and Cleopatra (large studio, sleeps 3) apartments can be opened to each other. This creates a contiguous space of approximately 1,300 square feet.

Hill Town Life

This apartment was exactly what I expected. Quite and just outside the hustle and bustle of the festival crowds. The shared patio faces the setting sun and is surrounded by fruit trees and flowers.

Spello review

The apartment we stayed in was the ground floor one of several in the complex , and perhaps the most compact. As such, it is really only suited to either single or a couple occupancy as space is restricted in this apartment because the inner half is a former storage cellar and not particularly useable.. What the apartment does have, one of its saving graces, is direct access to a pleasant garden area , although in either mid winter or mid summer this would be of little use in practical terms. Quite well equipped (the only suggestion we might offer is to consider good quality, cotton rather than synthetic sheets & bedding) , it might be more a place for shorter stays rather than longer ones, and as such offers a central base to explore the remarkably restored and pristine township that is Spello. And finally, we would like to extend a ‘thank you’ to the ‘manager’ of these apartments, Nadia, who is a warm and efficient host and very happy to share her local knowledge. Thank you.

Schöne Zeit in Spello

Beautiful apartment in a breathtaking location.

The apartment was everything we needed and more. Gina and Nadia were always very easy to reach for any questions and booking was quick and simple. Do be aware that it requires some walking on uneven, steep cobble stone roads to to get to and from the apartment. Nadia was a dear and helped with luggage though. Hoping to stay here again someday!

The reviews are bang on - a great experience!

Our 4 days in Spello were amazing. No need to repeat everything the other reviews have said, except to highlight that Spello is a beautiful hilltop town, and well located for many other interesting visits in the area. The Cleopatra apartment is perfect for a couple, with direct access to the lovely garden with it’s spectacular panoramic view and magnificent sunsets. (There are 3 other apartments for larger groups.). Gina is very attentive to her guests with great tips and recommendations, and invited us with other guests for a great dinner in a small restaurant in Collepino. She also referred us to an amazing cooking lesson in nearby Montefalco. With so much to see and do in the area, we’d love to go back for a more extensive stay!

Absolutely Charming ! All the comforts of home.. warm, invitiing and breathtaking location !

Incredible experience ! We knew within 24 hours we would want to return ! We would not have had the same trip with out Gina ! She introduced us... and showed us places and experiences we would not have had on our own ! She made us feel welcome, like "family" and we absolutely adored her company. It was wonderful to meet other guests as well that were staying in other apartments. The apartment was so charming, and the garden views were spectacular ! We loved the entry way and walking out the door to see it all ! So close to town and easy to grab fresh morning bread from the bakery (highly recommend this !)..or a quick ingredient for a home cooked meal ! All the necessary amenities and more. The decorations are fantastic and so authentic Italy. Kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked with everything you could need ! Nadia was wonderful as well and saved our forgotten camera outside and graciously extended the use of her umbrella for the week ! (Thanks Nadia ! ) I would think there is no better place in Italy to stay ! Spello will forever have a special place in our hearts thanks to Gina and Casa Spello <3

Experience the local feel of Spello in this charming apartment

We really enjoyed our four night stay in Casa Spello. It was a great base for our travels to Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, and dinner in Collepino. Gina provided recommendations to aid our decision-making on what to see during our short visit to Umbria. Spello itself is lovely and we could have stayed there the entire time enjoying the slow pace, the friendly people, and the delicious food and wine. Like other medieval towns, it requires physical stamina to manage the hills but we'd go back in a minute!

Charming Studio in Beautiful Spello

We spent 4 wonderful days in Spello and this studio apartment was a perfect home away from home for two of us. Spello is the most unusual place we've ever stayed in, and this charming apartment was unique! The apartment is located in a large house divided into 4 units, each with its own separate entry. A door to the back yard leads to a beautiful panoramic view where we enjoyed breakfasts and stunning sunsets from a lovely shaded sitting area. On the third evening when we returned from our daily adventures, we found a handwritten note from our property's host, who just happened to be in town when we were. To our complete surprise, she offered to take all of her guests, to a very small neighboring town featuring only one restaurant. Gina had pre-arranged that the owner of the restaurant and his wife (the chef) would prepare a multi-course dinner for the 9 of us. That very day, they had foraged fresh truffles and porcini mushrooms which they grilled, shaved, and stuffed.Sitting in a private room, we enjoyed non-stop conversation, and instantly bonded over wine, cheese, breads, meats, grilled meats and cheese, and of course, scrumptious desserts. As promised by Gina, It was an unforgettable dining experience. This dinner was just an example of the extra thought Gina puts into helping her guests feel at home and knowledgeable about the area. Weeks before we arrived in Italy, she emailed us a detailed document with tips of restaurants, cafes, things to do, and how to get around Italy. Her guide was so detailed and customized for visitors to Spello. This medieval town is a very special place, but is not for the faint of heart. Visitors cannot park their cars by their accommodations but must park a good 15 minute walk away. Gina's assistant met us upon our arrival, and she helped us bring our luggage and belongings to the rental. The unit has a very comfortable queen sized bed, adequate storage space, ample bathroom, and a small but serviceable kitchen. Spello streets are narrow and picturesque with flowers bursting around every bend-resisting the temptation to constantly shoot photos is hard. There are many excellent restaurants and cafes to choose from, lovely shops to visit and friendly, welcoming locals to meet. With a car, we were easily able to make day trips to nearby towns including Assisi and Perugia. This hilltop medieval escape is a gem in Umbria we'll never forget!

Fantastic property, and even better owners :)

Casa Spello is a beautiful retreat, wonderfully decorated and furnished with everything you could need for a fantastic stay. The photos don't do the room justice, much better than pictured, and the rock walls keep things cool even the the heat of summer. Fantastic view out the porch. Spello is a beautiful town, flowers around every turn. (Be sure to take advantage of Gina's reccomendations- she really knows the town and can fill you in on shops, restaurants, and local festivals that may not be in other guides). Do bring your walking shoes as Spello is a hill town, but if the nona's can make it up and down the hills so can you :) Fantastic stay, wonderful owner, HIGHLY recommended!

Under the spell of SPELLO

CASA SPELLO is the ideal choice for a traveler who has sped through Italy before and now wants to slow down and savor the real flavor of Italy. Located on a hillside overlooking the Umbrian Valley, built into the city wall, the Cleopatra apartment charms with comfort and history. Views along the wall or over the garden watching the sunset make anytime of day enjoyable. No car is necessary since the train station is just down the hill connecting you to Rome or Florence in 2 hours but providing access to numerous towns in between plus anywhere else in Europe you might want to go. Enjoy local market days, seasonal fairs, delicious food and welcoming residents. If the owners, Gina and Dan, happen to be on site you will get an added bonus with their insider tips and recommendations. They both went out of their way to see that my stay was more than I could have hoped for.

I am a human rights advocate. I live in San Francisco, California. I have been awarded several prizes for my human rights work. The work I do for human rights is pro-bono. My husband and I travel all over the world. I speak English, Italian, Francais, Espanol and I love hosting people from all over the world in my Casa Spello. I have family in Italy and family in the USA. My husband Dan has a property management company based in San Francisco, but he lets me manage Casa Spello. He is also involved in civil rights causes and served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in India for two years. Of course when I have serious issues with Casa Spello regarding a frozen pipe or anything to do with the building, I consult with him. But I deal with all the bureaucracy in the Italian government offices.

Casa Spello for us is a "labor of love" and a pride of ownership.

Why they chose this property

My husband Dan and I bought this property because we fell in love with its magnificent views and the fact that it was built in hand carved stones from the nearby Subasio Mountains.

Spello took us under its spell and in fact this medieval villas has recently been declared by Smarter Travel as one of 11 of the most beautiful secret villages in Italy.

What makes this property unique

The property offers breathtaking sunsets from our windows and sweeping views from our beautiful garden. Sunset watching in our garden enjoying a glass of local wine and an appetizer is a must and this is what our guests love the most. The inside of the units are in hand carved peach color stone which gives the interior a warm glow. This warm soft light creates a very romantic atmosphere.
