About this property
Tranquil Apt in Eastern Market/Capitol Hill!
Summary:
Whether you are traveling for family vacation or for business, the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood will charm you into wishing you could stay longer. Pick up fresh baked goods and coffee from the Eastern Market, a book from local bookstore, and enjoy them at our calming English Basement unit. Complete with a desk and comfortable office chair, dining table, and a gorgeous kitchen, this is the perfect place for your trip!
The Space:
This English Basement unit can comfortably sleep 4 people; The bedroom has a queen sized bed. The second room, which is located in between the bedroom and the living room, has a trundle bed that will expand into two twin sized beds (best suited for two kiddos).
With plenty of room to spread out, one can retreat to the private bedroom, while others can get some work done on the desk located in the second 'bedroom', and others hang out in the living room, conducive to conversation and unwinding after a day of sightseeing.
The comfortable couch in the living room and the dining area are an ideal communal space to enjoy each other's company. The gorgeous, brand-new kitchen is perfect for savoring some local flavor or a home-cooked meal, and planning tomorrow's activities!
High-speed wifi, SmartTV (located in the room with the trundle bed), and a washer and dryer are also available for your use. In addition, we boast a true rarity in the city, you will have a shared outdoor spaces in the back of the property, perfect for enjoying morning coffee or an evening glass of wine.
The house is 4 blocks from the Eastern Market metro station (be sure to check out the Market itself, open Saturday & Sunday), 3 blocks from Trader Joes and two blocks from a large splash pad and enclosed playground (perfect for kiddos)!
Guest Access:
Guests will have access to the entire unit with 24/7 access by use of an electronic keypad door. The apartment is not shared.
There is a family living upstairs. Please note that the everyday sounds and noises of family life (footsteps, stairs, kids playing, etc.) can be heard in both directions. You will undoubtedly hear them (and they will hear you) as they go about their everyday life.
The Neighborhood:
The star of the neighborhood is the Eastern Market, which is about 4 minute walk from the home. It is a 19th-century brick building that houses a wide range of stalls from fresh food, local produce, art and crafts, fresh flowers, baked goods, candles, to artisan cheeses and unique DC souvenirs. It is a perfect place to find a little something to remember your trip by.
Capitol Hill Books, located right in the middle of the market, is our personal favorite preowned bookstore. It's cramped with towers of books from floor to ceiling, it feels magical!
Within 5 minutes walk from the home, the Barracks Row is teeming with amazing restaurants, lively and unique bars as well as a plethora of entertainment options - from Miracle Theater, Art gallery, to beautiful street murals on every corner; those interested in the arts or just looking to see something new will not be disappointed!
Aside from being so close to the United States Congress, Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington DC, stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential communities in Washington, and, with roughly 35,000 people in just under 2 square miles (5 km2), it is also one of the most densely populated.
You're also a very short walk, bus, metro or Uber ride from a number of other neighborhoods not to be missed; including The Wharf, Chinatown, Gallaudet University, and the Navy Yard.
Getting Around:
By Metro/ Bus – The closest metro is Eastern Market (orange, silver, and blue line), you can walk there in just 3 minutes (0.2 mile). We are located within just a few blocks of the DC Circulator bus that operates on a predictable fixed route and schedule, and run between the city's main attractions and some of the more popular neighborhoods for visitors.
You can catch the DC Circulator bus at the Eastern Market Metro Station. In addition, we are 1-3 blocks away from several Capital Bikeshares and bus lines, including the 32, 36, 90, 92 and more!
You can buy SmarTrip tickets (like plastic credit cards) or paper tickets at the station, the SmarTrip cards give a better rate per ride than the paper tickets. (Ask for senior rate if applicable).
By Bike: - Capital Bikeshare offers bikes for rent by the hour or day and are available near the Eastern Market Metro: Pennsylvania Ave & 8th St SE, and the intersection at 11th St & C St SE.
Capital BikeShare ((1-877) 430-BIKE (2453).
Other Things to Note:
Please note, guests will have to walk through the 'bedroom' with the trundle bed to access the private bedroom with the queen sized bed.
The bottom mattress of the trundle bed can only be pulled out most of the way, so about 5'' remains underneath the top mattress.
The trundle 'bedroom' does include pocket doors, to allow privacy from the hallway / living room area.
There is one TV (smart streaming) and it is located in the trundle 'bedroom'.
