Cute apartment with a great kitchenette for those who don't want to eat out all the time. Wi-Fi was provided and entrance to the property was easy and I felt secure. The host has lot of little extras and tries to make your stay pleasant. There are steep stairs for any who would be troubled by that but they are very stable and have railings.
My girlfriend and I chose this place to be close to an event. This place was priced right and was in a peaceful area but also very close to amenities and restaurants. For those who know of Zak’s restaurant, Carleton Place has one now.
Our hosts was prompt with communication and the room was clean and comfy. Chromecast worked great for snuggling and watching movies.
The only issue we had was with the fridge when we checked in. It didn’t appear to be cold. I turned it up to max (7) and it took some time but it did make things cold enough and the freezer at the bottom of the fridge kept our ice cream frozen solid. Prior to the fridge cooling I kind of panicked and ran to Walmart and bought a cooler and bags of ice to keep drinks and the ice cream cold and I mentioned the issue and my quick solution.
The host offered to bring in a contractor to look at the fridge because it had been working the day prior but also offered to reimburse me for the cooler costs. In the end the fridge did keep things cool and meeting the host when we were loading the car, I said don’t worry about reimbursement because we will keep the cool and as long as the fridge says on max it was working. We thanked her for everything.
I received an email with reimbursement for the cooler anyways which I would say is above and beyond and great customer service.
We also left two rolls of paper towel for the next guests along with a roll of aluminum foil that we used for wrapping pizza.

About the host
Hosted by Adam Newlands
we have been hosting travellers since 2012 and are currently superhosts on another site.
we love! cycling, craft beer, Carleton Place, running and our kidlets! Sylvia's mum (Granny) lives with us in the winter and in the summer we rent out her apartment. We live in the main house.
Why they chose this property
We have been searching for a century home with a secondary suite in downtown Carleton place since 2016! We finally found the house just down the street from our former home, and bought and sold during the tail end of the pandemic.
What makes this property unique
This century home backs onto the Heritage museum and labyrinth. We fell in love with the character of the home as well as the covered terrace and shady yard.
It was once home to McFadden Furs. Hiram McFadden (1858 - 1936) was born in Ashton, Ontario. He was an engineer with the Edwards Lumber Company and left that line of work to learn the fur business.
A naturalist and sportsman, he was active in many sporting events locally. He achieved marked prominence as a marksman and trap shooter and qualified for Canada's Bisley team on four different occasions. In 1911 he captured the Earl and Countess Grey medal for high aggregate score.
When Hiram's daughter Edie married local boy Harry Umphry, in 1927, he handed over the fur business to his new son-in-law. Harry expanded the business, and built a large addition to the east side of the William Street house to provide a cool storage vault for furs. He closed the business and retired in 1963.
