About this property

A/C! BIG Rooms! Lots of Space! Porch and Patio with gas fire table! Value!!

Welcome to the 1882 Dakota Territory Vacation Home. This home is located in the quaint mountain town of Custer, the Estes Park of South Dakota. Custer is a great mountain town that teems with life. The town offers the friendly smiles of South Dakotans and the ability to walk to dining and entertainment anytime of the day. Best of all, you have direct access to all the sites from this location which is perched just 2 miles from the West Gate of the Park. After a weary day of fun and frolic, retire in this vacation home with its double brick walls and the only thing that will rattle your cage is the snoring from a deep, deep sleep.

This home offers the traveler all the comforts of home surrounded by all the modern conveniences, all while staying in a piece of Custer's storied past. This home was constructed shortly after General Custer's first expedition into the area. Also, with a little investigation one discovers that while the original Custer County Courthouse was being built, a home, not too far away (this one), was also rising from the ground. Folks were amazed back in the day (and even still to this day) how similar the materials were (bricks, bldg hardware, etc) to that of the New Courthouse....after closer inspection the builder of the home wound up in the clink for siphoning off materials from the courthouse for his own gain. His 'act' still stands to this day and can be noted in the earliest photographs of Custer. Come and stay in a true piece of Custer History, The 1882 Dakota Territory Home.

A Virtual Tour:
Main Level: Savor a morning cup of coffee on The Hitch – our front porch. Minnie’s Kitchen is equipped with almost every culinary tool you could ever need during your visit, including a dishwasher. There are two grocery stores in town: Custer County Market, two blocks east & across the street, pick up some buffalo meat for grilled burgers on the McKinley Patio, grill and tools are ready...just add the sizzle. For a more formal dinner at home, choose a bottle of wine at Lynn’s Dakota Mart on the eastern edge of downtown. If you’re in the mood for a meal out, enjoy one of Custer's many fine restaurants.

For some Custer-style fun, you’ll find board games and puzzles in the McHugh Game Parlor, as well as arcade games and a juke box – no quarters needed. Parents, there is an OFF switch if you just can’t take it anymore! Guests needing a change of pace can relax in the Dakota Dining/Living Room where a selection of local interest books and prints by local artists can be found. A DVD player and some movies can be found by the living room TV. A Video store is just across the street. The Sundstrom Hideaway is the only bedroom (queen bed) on the main level, and offers easy access to the kitchen, laundry room and main level bathroom. Of course, FREE WiFi throughout!

Upper Level: We hope you find the Newberg Nest (king bed – back bedroom upstairs) to be cozy, comfortable and even a little romantic. Relax in the cozy reading chair or watch a little TV before bed. In Rosa’s Room you'll find a queen bed – (upstairs at front of house), and in Julia’s Room (1 single bed & 1 queen bed – (middle upstairs walk through bedroom) with Playstation and several games to choose from. Two TVs in the house are hooked up to local cable. There’s a selection of books for your enjoyment upstairs. Towels for the upstairs bathroom are in the hallway, and spare bedding is in Rosa’s closet. Extra towels can be found in the laundry room off the kitchen. Feel free to use the washer and dryer during your stay if you wish.

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, we hope you’ll enjoy a stroll through Sadie’s Garden – a great place to unwind on the east side of the house. There are two Rhubarb plants in back that can be harvested for wonderful desserts.
Relax and Enjoy your stay at the - 1882 Dakota Territory House!
We hope you’ll sign our guestbook on the main level before you head back home.

Your Hosts, Dave and Julie

A little history...
In 1982, on the one-hundredth birthday of what is now the 1882 Dakota Territory Vacation Home, Gayle Newberg, former owner, spoke for the home:

“I’m celebrating my Birthday, just one hundred years ago today my builder and owner walked through the front door of his “comfortable and commodious” new brick home on “upper Custer Avenue.” His name was Patrick McHugh, owner of a saloon and brick yard, and president of the board of trustees of Custer City, Dakota Territory.”

“I sit firmly on a side hill on lot 5, block 34. My 17-inch (thick) walls sit on a wide foundation of rock. They are built of two courses of brick with space in between. Every sixth row is placed endwise to tie them firmly. Where my owner got his windows, doors, and hardware and woodwork, I haven’t a guess, but I have always been proud that they match those in the equally new courthouse down the street a block and a half.”

“On July 13, 1882, Pat gave me to his wife, Rosa.” Poor Pat, it’s good that he built well. I was pretty shaken to learn that, as a result of a judgment against him by Messers, Plunkett and Lynch of Pennington County, I was to be auctioned off from the courthouse steps at 10 a.m. Sept. 28, 1883 by Sheriff John Code and his deputy, H.N. Ross.”

“I was bought by Buell R. Wood for $462.72, who promptly “gave” me to his wife. The Woods made me nervous. They mortgaged me 13 times between 1883 and 1907. The last was to Anna M. Courney, and she got me. Turns out she was married to William Courtney. It took Anna six years to clear my name, even though she made “valuable improvements”. In fact the Woods were still making legal claims until 1919, when Anna and her husband sold me to Julia and Frank Gira who turned me over to George Hitch. You may remember the Hitches…related to the Kidwells, I do. They added on my front porch! It was pretty fancy to be sure, it really dressed me up. I felt like a fine lady.”

“Well, George gave me to his wife, Nellie. In 1941, Widow Hitch sold me to to Carl Sundstrom, a single man...ran a newspaper, I’ve heard. Carl, by his attorney-in-fact, J.L. Sundstrom, sold me to L.D. and Signa Pitts (saved having to give it to her) in 1945. Lon (Pitts) built a fancy house on the corner and sold me to Harvey Robertson. Harvey and Minnie took good care of me for many peaceful years. In 1972, they reluctantly entrusted me to some old friends, Winston and Gayle Newberg. I was her birthday present!”

“These people! They never let me rest. They kept my innards in an uproar...always changing and improving me.....and they decide I need another improvement. It’s painful but sort of interesting. Keeps me from getting old.”

Since 1982, the house was purchased by the Gausman family; Chet and Mary, and Kris and Gretchen Gosch. They have also shaken its bricks and timber with a complete modernization of the interior by Black Hills Design and Construction. It’s present owners are Bob and Sarah Kopp, a young Entrepreneurial family.

The 128 year old Romanesque Revival home is located on Mt. Rushmore Rd., formally known as “upper Custer Avenue”, “Custer City, Dakota Territory”.

Neat Old Home in a Prime Spot

This home in Custer was the perfect home base for exploring the Black Hills area. At the end of a long day, this was a great place to come back and relax. The game room kept the kids occupied while we kicked back on the front porch.

Great Location for our stay in the Black Hills

This house was the perfect location for our visit to the Black Hills. Custer is in the middle of everything we wanted to do, so it was an excellent home base. Our party of 8 was comfortable without being crowded. The kids loved the arcade room especially! The street out front is a little busy, but back in the bedrooms we couldn't really hear the traffic noise. Overall, an excellent and memorable stay in a unique property!

Custer charm

We all absolutely loved the Dakota house. So old and so much history. Loved the older pictures of the Custer area way back when. Custer is a must to visit and close to everything you want to explore. Property manager is very helpful and prompt. 5 star stay 👍👍

Funky place could use some TLC

Bedroom layout upstairs provides little privacy when it’s hot and AC on. Downstairs bedroom small. But all beds were very comfortable. Side door to patio would not lock. Front room should be made more usable (filled with stuff). Living room furniture uncomfortable. Great kitchen. Nice patio but cigarette butts left. Very convenient location. The place provided what we needed but nothing extra.

Custer 2023

The property was everything we expected, comfortable and secure. The only suggestion that I would have for the property owner is to maybe do a little re-hab on the gas grill. It functioned just fine but could use a little re-hab such as replacing a couple of worn components above the burners.

Great Family Vacation Destination!

We rented this house for our family vacation this year. We have a family of 5 (mom, dad, 13, 11, 6 year old) and this house was perfect for us! The kids loved the pinball and arcade game (ok - Mom and Dad loved them too!) and it was amazing that a majority of our time was together playing in there instead of seperate rooms on personal electronic devices. The house was centrally located and we walked to dinner every evening. The owners had provided everything we needed as well as information on the area including favorite restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Would definitely recommend to anyone traveling to this area and will stay there again if we ever visit this part of the country again! During our time, we went to Mt. Rushmore, Windcave, Jewel Cave (note - if plannign to visit call to reserve tour time!), Mammoth Site, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake. We could have spent another few days in this area. Thank you for a WONDERFUL family vacation experience!

A charming, nice, big house!

This rental worked out perfect for two families traveling together. My family and my brothers family. We really enjoyed the video games even though they were loud (or maybe I'm too old haha). My brother thought from the pictures that you could see mt Rushmore from the property and that there was a lake on the property, but I didn't assume that. It was literally just a house on the main road, no extra property. The kitchen was wonderful and I appreciated being able to do a loud of laundry after a long road trip. The owners were super nice and super helpful and answered my one question really fast. There was a lot of room and places to sleep, even for our party of 10. The beds were nice too. I liked hanging out on the porch and we enjoyed the grill for a dinner at home. I initially thought three days was too long but I actually wished we had more time. Coming from California, I really loved South Dakota!

Custer Home

A bit disappointed with cleanliness of the property. Everything appeared vacuumed although appeared to have been vacuumed quite awhile ago as evidenced by dead beetles and flies in many corners of the house and on nearly every windowsill. I even had the pleasant surprise of untucking the bed to find a fly on top of the pillow. The first night showers and hot water smelled of rotten eggs/sulfur. Water odor eventually cleared after a couple of days, but it left me with impressionis was probably best if I didn’t drink it. The pinball machine and arcade game was the best and only standout aspect of the house. I will not be staying in this property again.

This property was a great home base to explore nearby sites like Mt Rushmore and Wind Cave NP.

We enjoyed our 6 day stay in this unique property with a fun origin story. We were comfortable spreading out in the sleeping areas in the converted attic space which had two end rooms with queen beds and a middle room (pass through to one bedroom) that also had a queen bed and a double bed. Downstairs we enjoyed several rounds on the Galaga and pinball machine, and playing songs on the jukebox, what a hoot! The Buffalo head was a nice touch. The living room was comfortable and large dining area ajoined where we could eat meals together. The kitchen was well stocked with the dishes, pots, pans and utensils, with labels on cabinets and drawers a nice touch making things easier to find. Outside we enjoyed the patio table area when we brough home ice cream treats from the Dairy Queen just down the street. We appreciated the laundry area that allowed us to get everyone's gear clean for another week. We had one issue when we arrived a window had been left open without a screen during the cleaning / turn over and flies had setup shop upstairs. Our hosts were very responsive, they sent someone out within the hour to clean out the flies and the next day arranged for a spraying. It was fly season, so we did continue to have some get inside, but much more manageable (keep doors and windows closed or screened) after the clean up. This was a comfortable home base for our family of 2 adults and 4 children (age 4-11), conveniently located to a number of area sites including Mt Rushmore, Wind Cave NP, Custer State Park, 1880 Train, Crazy Horse and many hikes. We saw lots of wildlife in the area, both in the parks and along the roads near Customer. October was post-season and several of the restaurants and museums were closed for the season, but there were several good restaurants we could walk to easily from the property (Custer Wolf, Bugling Bull, Skogen Kitchen, etc) and there was a grocery store across the street.

We are a family that has hospitality in our blood. I was raised in a family resort setting in Northern Minnesota and fully understand and desire to give a great guest expierinece here in Custer. We fell in love with South Dakota and the Black Hills after a family road trip 8 years ago and and we actually stayed in this property while vacationing in the Hills and the rest, as they say, is history.

Why they chose this property

We love the convenience that Custer has to offer. We originally vacationed in more remote settings but really loved the location this property offers to all the 'must see/must do's' while in the Hills, not to mention the ability to get items that we forgot at the store etc..
