Play in the large private pool with mini-waterslide and rock waterfall, relax in the hot tub overlooking the ocean, or watch the shooting stars from the skydeck of your own ''Castle in the Air''!

If your group absolutely must be on the oceanfront or needs a second vacation property, please see our larger property, Castle by the Sea (#393567).

If you’re looking for something to occupy your time that doesn’t involve lounging Oceanside on the community’s uncrowded beaches, Villages at Ocean Hill offers a full-service gym—complete with both weight and cardio equipment, a sport court, two tennis courts, and a basketball court for maximum fitness opportunities. There’s also a freshly paved 2-mile bike path that connects Villages at Ocean Hill with the Corolla Light resort community, as well as two large swimming pools that are open from 10 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Needs a lot of TLC and upkeep
The best part was the location (if you're a beach person) .The house at one time, may have been a great place. However , it was in such poor condition, I would not have booked it. My group stayed in the beginning of Oct. , 2023 figuring the temperature would be ok for the pool (which we paid an additional $500.00 to heat) but the heater didn't work and the pool water temp was 73 degrees (bought a pool thermometer) The owner promised a full refund but as of 6 months has not repaid (VRBO tried to contact him but no response) Pool slide was damaged, decks were rotted (actually holes in the wood), windows and ceiling fans were not cleaned (dust on the leading edge of the blades were 1/4 inch thick) , master bath had a wide rust mark from leaking faucet, outside light fixture hanging by the wires, many outside sliding doors were hard to open, screens in the gazebo were torn off or hanging (I have pictures to prove these allegations) otherwise washer and dryer, appliances and kitchen, living room were in good order. He needs to find a better housekeeping company and personally visit his property before it degrades further

Memories
This house is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed everything about it. I absolutely love the pool with the waterslide! It was so nice to take the kids to the beach which was a very short less than 3 min walk. Then after being in the sun fighting the waves everyone enjoyed the clam cool partly shaded pool. Then at night to relax in the hotub letting go of stress and aches your body feels. I loved the fact there were so many of us and you couldn't hear the kids on the other floors. It was a very relaxing much needed family vacation perfect for making memories that will last a lifetime.

Lovely location, terrific owner
We went with family to stay at Bill's house. The house is indeed older, but we don't mind that. There were several problems including a broken grill, and the water heater busted. While these are normal problems that could happen at any time, Bill was very kind and swift to address them. It was challenging not having water for 12 hours with that many little kids but the complex had a pool with a bathroom so we made do! We also had to wait quite a bit for a plumber (no fault of Bill's), which meant we didn't get as much time on the beach as we would've liked. Probably the most disrupting issue was the raccoons who were in the vent/attic. Again, nothing BIll could do to prevent that and he was swift to respond. But, it did impact our sleep. Some of our family was very upset and seriously considered leaving early. We spent a lot of time communicating, taking pictures and then helping the trapper when he came. Again, more time waiting and not doing what we wanted to do. All in all, we loved the area, and the house was nice for a big family. We would suggest that the upstairs kitchen pantry be unlocked. For a big family there wasn't really anywhere convenient to store food. Again, Bill was communicative and so helpful and none of the issues were things he could have predicted. We are appreciative for how quickly he worked to resolve everything!

Roomy Home
Loved the castle in the air. It was an amazing home. However we did fine the house needing some cleaning. Upon our arrival we found somethings in the home weren’t cleaned. Possibly needs a new cleaning service. It did not cause us to have a unpleasant vacation though. The home was very large and housed 16 people very comfortably. Overall my family really enjoyed our stay and would more than likely stay at castle in the air again.

Great location, big house...needs upkeep and some maintenance issues
Beautiful location, big house, lots of activities near by. Short walk to the beach! Overall nice house. Definitely outdated and could use a little TLC. We had some issues with the cleanliness/cleaning upon our arrival. We ended up cleaning the entire house ourselves which was disappointing but communication with Bill in regards to issues was easy and he responded promptly with all concerns. Deck had some loose nails and aged wood so we did not allow children on the deck. Pool was nice but very shaded and wish there was more room for lounge chairs. One toilet did not work, one sink was broke but Bill was made aware and responded that these items would be fixed in the future. Overall good stay!

Hooked up!
Amazing location. Easy walk to the beach. The entrance to drive on the beach was just one block away!! Grocery store and gas close by. The house is a mansion. So many decks and windows with beautiful views. They have baby stuff!!!! A baby gate for the stairs, playpens, and a bike with baby carrier on the back!! So awesome! Fun arcade game and pool table although no chalk for the cues so hard to play. They provided only 3 rolls of toilet paper and there are like 6 bathrooms. Weird. And 2 trash bags so we had to buy bags for all the other little cans. We also had to buy salt, coffee, sugar, dish soap, paper towels, laundry detergent, soap. I expected a rental to have small amounts of these basics to get me through the first day. But just be prepared there was nothing. It would have been no big deal if I’d known in advance, that’s why I mention it for you! Such a shame the pool is not open for spring break :(. Other pools in the area were open and this pool looked so nice! We offered to pay to open it up but never heard back. Bring an extra pair of flip flops for the top deck. It’s wood so you’ll want shoes but you won’t want to go downstairs to your room each time! So bring a pair to leave Up there! We would return here in a heartbeat. Thanks Bill for sharing this lovely house. We watched dolphins leaping and twisting in the air. Wild horses ran alongside our car. We skimboarded in the surf. Rode bikes to the nature trail. Watched an osprey catch a fish and fly with it overhead. My baby played in the ocean waves for the first time. We’ll never forget this vacation or the amazing house!

Very disappointed
We rent from VRBO on a regular basis and sadly, this is the first negative experience we have had. The location and view from the property were exceptional and my family of 8 had a fantastic time, despite our disappointment in the property. In the 1990's when the home was built, I am sure it was spectacular, but it appears as though it has not been maintained since. The pool and hot tub were both clean, but the pool area was in sad need of cleaning and TLC. The house was spacious and very comfortable for my family, but there were no supplies whatsoever, including toilet paper or dish towels. Not even a broom and dust pan. The carpets need desperate cleaning, which is important when you have a toddler. What i read in another review about the nails in the decking was spot on. Do not walk on the decks barefoot. We were without a washer all week long and the toilets overflowed often. This property has GREAT potential so I am sad to say negative things, but for what was nearly the equivalent of my monthly salary, we not only expected, but have always enjoyed the pristine properties that we have visited via VRBO.

Great Location but TLC Needed
Our group of 15 (6 Adults, 9 Children) had a great time together and would at any property. The location and access to the beach was outstanding, it was a 1 minute walk from door to sandy shore. The size of the house easily accommodated our group with lots of master bedrooms. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and needed items for cooking large meals for a big group, we ordered pizza once and cooked for ourselves for all other meals. Dining room was great for a large group. The pool was great and larger than most private pools offered. The decor was fine, but dated. Furniture was fine but showed wear. The views from the decks was wonderful, but the deck needed TLC. There were areas of mildew and it was not hard to find screws that were sticking up. Outside shower was great but door pulled off the hinges halfway through the week. We informed owner. Poor drainage at outside shower. Exterior showed signs of needed paint. Flies were problematic all week. Previous renters did not set out bins for trash pick up on Saturday so we had mostly full trash bins when we arrived. But even after trash was picked up on Wednesday, flies were a problem at the pool and even for some in the house. Perhaps pest control could fix this, perhaps not. Hot tub was great but cover is in poor repair. A major issue was a very significant leak. We dealt with the issue twice. Heavy rain caused a shower-like leak over the door of the sitting room adjacent to the dining room. The leak was so significant, we heard the leak before we saw it. The owner was informed and sent video. We had to use bath towels to mop up the rainwater. This caused us to do 2 loads of laundry to get clean bath towels back to the group. These things happen but it happened twice and it's not fun to deal with property issues while on vacation. The owner was very friendly in all communications but did little to help us with the leak. We appreciated use of the pool a few hours before our week even started because we arrived earlier than expected. That was appreciated. Overall we had a wonderful week with friends. The house was fine but needs TLC in areas mentioned.

Great location but very dated and not well-maintained
There are several positives with this property. There is great communication with the owner with phone, text and messages. It has a great view of the ocean and very close to possibility of seeing wild horses on the 4 x 4 beach. The size and layout of the house was also nice for a large family are gathering. There were unfortunately several negatives as well. When we arrived there were no clean towels in the entire house. The house cleaner could not accommodate us with new towels until the next day. The owner did purchase 10 towels that I picked up from the local hardware store even though he knew we had 15 guest. This also did not include hand towels or washcloths. This house has apparently been a rental for a long time and has not been maintained well. The furniture is falling apart including the high chairs by the bar in the kitchen which are truly unsafe to use. The 1990s furniture has most likely not been replaced nor has it been clean since it was originally purchased. The house did not seem very clean. The toilets were all stained yellow from the well water which apparently is very high in iron. We had to use bottled water for all cooking and drinking. This is apparently the only house on the block with well water. Two of the children got splinters in their feet from the deck which also has many pumped nails. Overall this could be a wonderful house if it was maintained.

The Best
Not sure where to start - EVERYTHING was excellent - Location, property, owner! It was just the four of us and house was huge but still managed to feel homey and so comfortable. Unlike some rentals, the house was amazingly well stocked and very well cared for. I tend to be pretty picky about cleanliness and house certainly met my expectations. Communication with the owner was top notch, which I really appreciated. We had some beautiful days and some rainy ones but there was always something to do - beach, games, hanging out together in the family room. We cooked in most days and did not want for anything - plenty of pots, pans, silverware, glasses. Husband made bread 2-3 times and I’m envious of the stove and oven! The hot tub was a joy and located so you can look out at the beach - we used it everyday. The top deck is amazing at sunset. Drove on the beach and even got to see the wild horses. It’s really hard for me to pick out my favorite thing about the house - everything really was great, especially how close it is to the beach. In summary, we had an amazing time and can’t wait to return. If you book here, you will not be sorry!!

Enjoyed it all
We had a great time! Family ranging in age from 9 months to 68 years, we all enjoyed our time. The pool, hot tub, and pool table were favorites. We rented a golf cart and bikes to go back and forth for donuts at Northern Lights and the basketball court. We paid for the pool to be heated which was great since it had rained and cooled the water nightly. We recommend this rental. We messaged with the owner some, but had better communication by calling. Overall great experience.

Big house, great location
Stayed with 2 families (4 adults, 4 kids) for a week in summer 2020. House is really big, more than enough room - could have had a 3rd family. Location is spectacular, ocean and nature preserve views, less than 2 minute walk to the beach. House itself is getting a bit worn down - it gets rented all summer and while there are professional cleaners and pool maintenance that comes, there’s no professional property manager to oversee it, so things start to get missed, like broken pool cues, broken arcade game, some loose nails around. Owner is responsive via email, but unless it’s a cleaning or pool issue where he can call somebody else, he’s not around and there’s nothing to do about an issue in a timely manner, although presumably it gets fixed for the next season. Overall would recommend for size and location, just have realistic expectations about the house itself.

About the host

Hosted by Bill

Host profile image
Patrice and Bill grew up in Pennsylvania, lived in Maryland for almost 20 years, and now live in Raleigh, NC. Our four children and Father-in-Law (who lives with us) all enjoy the many faces of the ocean--from calm blue waves lapping on the wide beach to churning whitecaps generated by storms at sea.

After vacationing on the beaches of New Jersey as children, we enjoyed our first family reunions on the beaches of Delaware and Virginia. We then moved our reunions farther south to the clean, family-friendly beaches of North Carolina.

Why they chose this property

We rented houses on the Outer Banks for many years. From each of those houses, we made mental notes of features that worked well for the three generations attending our family reunions.

When we designed 'Castle in the Air', we incorporated the best features from each of the houses at which we had stayed over the years: Pool, Game Room and Recreation Room for the children to have their private space; Hot Tub, Whirlpools for two and televisions in all four Master Suites for the adults; Sun room and private deck for those whose idea of a great vacation is reading the book they have wanted to read for months.

We paid particular attention to providing views of the ocean from almost every room, but especially from the common areas--Kitchen, Living Room, Dining Room.

This house is truly our 'Castle in the Air'.

What makes this property unique

Spectacular, panoramic views of historic Corolla Lighthouse, Ocean, Sound, National Park and undeveloped Northern Outer Banks from 4th floor deck. 1 minute walk to beach. Choice of 3 pools in which to swim each day as well as playground, basketball court, tennis courts, bike paths, walking trails.

Corolla is a unique destination that borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound, allowing visitors to access to the salty ocean waves, the calm kayak-worthy sound waters, and the idyllic maritime forests that lie in between.

Corolla adds a touch of modern class to the classic Outer Banks vacation.
