About this property

Maplewood. 1916 Olde Muskoka Cottage

Maplewood is a true cottaging experience, just like it used to be (with some modern conveniences added- high speed fiber optic unlimited internet!) Maplewood has remained authentic since the original owners Sir Robert and Lady Faulkner built it in 1916, with an interesting history.
The cottage has a central field stone fireplace, with comfortable seating surrounding. Firewood is provided.
To one side of the main room the window seat forms games table seating. You will find plenty of board games and jigsaw puzzles at the cottage.
To the other side of the main room, there is an indoor dining table.
The kitchen is equipped with Dish Washer, Microwave, and both a Kuerig coffee maker and a drip coffee maker, blender, and a toaster. There is plenty of dishes, silverware, utensils and glassware provided.
Tap water is drawn from the Lake, and is safe for dish washing. You will note it has a pale tea color, which is normal and safe. There is a water dispenser and 5 gallon water jugs provided for cooking and drinking.
There are 5 bedrooms, each equipped with towels and linens.
The main bathroom has a claw foot tub and separate shower. You may find the wooden toilet tank of interest! The tap water is drawn from the lake, but safe for washing and brushing teeth.
There is a 2 piece, main floor powder room, next to the stacking washer and dryer.
The central fireplace draws well and will take the chill out of a cool night. There is electric baseboard heat as well, if required.
A screen porch is a must for buggy evenings, and Maplewood's porch is equipped with comfortable seating and dining. The propane bbq is located within the screen porch as well, so the chef is happy!
As you progress down to the lake you pass by the sand court on the left. Great for volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, etc.
On the right is the Bunkie. This spot is a great hideout for older children or teens with a double bed and flip down sofabed, and it's own games table and chairs.
Further down are the sun decks. Each will get sun at different times, so both sun and shade seekers will be happy.
Keep going, and you are at the Gazebo. Its appointed with table and chairs for picnics by the dock, or close to the water to keep an eye on swimmers.
The shoreline has deep water swimming only, but there is a dock ladder to make access easy. There are 2 fun kayaks available for use, and a 'kayak arm' to help getting in and out of them.
A mention must be made about the elevation of the property to the lake. It is tiered with intermediate structures, and there are paths, stairs and steps, But, it is 120 steps , so a bit of elevation, or possibly not well suited to very small children.
Maplewood is warm and woody. To preserve it's charm, it comes with some creaks and tempermental windows and doors. We overlook some cracks in lieu or our appreciation for the original glass, hardware, and woodwork! We are happy to welcome guests that are looking to go bare foot for a week

Friends and Family getaway

We loved our stay at this classic cottage. The hosts responded very quickly to our messages and were very helpful. We would definitely stay at the Maplewood cottage again.

Wonderful, large, charming cottage in ideal location

We spent four fabulous days in this extraordinary cottage and wished we could stay the whole summer, rain or shine. The inside is vast yet cosy and charming and there are big screened in porches for dining and chilling out and playing board games. The kitchen is very well equipped. Outside, the swimming off the dock is fantastic and we enjoyed kayaking around and exploring the hidden corners of lake Vernon - especially the little channel on the north east shore at sunrise. The sandy area was perfect for beach volleyball or badminton - good sports for a mini family tournament and equipment was supplied in good condition. We also loved the several terraces on the path down from the cottage to the lake, each catching the sun at different moments during the day. The cottage is also surprisingly easily accessible by road while being quite secluded from neighbours. It would be ideal for a family reunion (but persons with mobility problems might struggle with the long stairs to the lake).

Why they chose this property

The cottage is in a neighborhood of the lake with large shoreline lots and no overcrowding. You will find boat traffic centered on the open lake away from the dock, which makes swimming, floating and canoeing safe and fun.
