TANIYA-Luxury Machiya House with a semi open-air bath
TANIYA is a renovated 100 year-old house adjacent to Kusakabe Family Residence (designated as Important Cultural Property) located in the old town of Takayama, only available to one exclusive group per night.
We would like our guests to see and experience rich history and authentic culture of Hida Takayama throughout the stay at TANIYA done by the local craftsmen who take prides in their work.
Location is perfect for sightseeing! 1 min from Miyagawa Morning Market.

◆ Doma(Dining room)
Doma(earthen-floor room) is one of major characteristic of traditional Machiya house. The spacious area with a vaulted ceiling and the beams arranged vertically and horizontally are essential part of beauty to enjoy this one-of-a-kind space. Gentle sunlight from the windows during daytime is another essence to enhance the beauty of the space and give the calm. It's perfect not only for mealtime but also for a desk work and reading.
◆ Tea room
On the 1st floor, the room facing to a street is a tea room. When you arrive, a fresh cup of matcha tea is served here to welcome you. The room is equipped with a set of tea utensils in the shelf. Please enjoy making your own matcha tea!
◆ Kitchen
The kitchen is fully equipped with Kitchen appliances and utensils for daily use. Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed, locally roasted coffee. As TANIYA is only 1 minute from Miyagawa Morning Market, cooking with fresh vegetables from the market and savoring the dish with a fresh coffee could be a highlight of your stay at TANIYA.

◆ Semi-open-air bath
The all-hinoki bathtub is one of the most popular features during your stay at TANIYA. The bathtub, washbasin, and adjoining restrooms are all made of luxurious hinoki cypress produced in Hida Takayama. The refreshing scent of hinoki cypress envelops you as you unwind and take in the stunning view of seasonal flowers and plants. The sliding-glass window can widely open. Please feel the fresh air and enjoy the sound of slight sound from a small river by the house.
◆ Bath Amenities
Shampoo, Conditioner, Body soap, Bath salt and skin care products are all made locally. The products uses naturally derived materials from the trees and the leaves grown in Hida region. A tooth brush is made of bamboo with no need to use toothpaste. " Go green! "
◆ Bedrooms
TANIYA is equipped with two bedrooms on the 2nd floor, allowing four adults to comfortably reside in comfort and privacy. Each bedroom features large picture windows offering stunning views of the garden and the quiet townscape. The larger room with 2 beds features two large semi-double beds that can be either placed together or kept separate for singles or children. The futon bed is laid out for 3 and 4 in the smaller room. Each bed room is beautifully furnished with masterpieces done by local furniture artists. The rooms with gentle lights are where we promise a relaxing and comfortable awaking and reading.
* Futon beds can be arranged in the rooms on the 1st floor.
▷During Takayama Festival(October 9-10), these rooms are the perfect location to view the gorgeously decorated yatai floats parade.
【Kusakabe Family Residence: Private Lounge】

The Kusakabe Family Residence is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property located in the old town of Takayama City. The magnificent building, protected to this day, was built in 1879. The Kusakabe family prospered as wealthy merchants in this area since the end of the 17th century and played an essential role in the town’s development.
While your stay, the way to enjoy this magnificent architecture could be unlimited such as sitting by the Irori(Open hearth) and enjoy sipping your local Sake as people used to. Night museum with your own curator is also available.
