About this property

13th century tower house in south of France

The “Maison du Sénéchal” is a tower dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth century, built around a stone spiral staircase. The Sénéchal was at the service of the king, which explains the impressive aspect of the house, and its 360 ° views to survey the area.
The house, listed as a historical monument, is located in the oldest part of the village, at the foot of the castle. The entrance is a wooden walkway overlooking a courtyard and a well.
The house has a main living room and 3 bedrooms, placed one above the other. All rooms have stunning views on the village, the castle, and the Aveyron valley.
There are three gardens and a courtyard for outdoor pleasures.

The house has a main living room and 3 bedrooms, placed one above the other. Each room is approximatively 30m2. They all have stunning views on the village, the castle, and the Aveyron valley.

The entrance is a wooden walkway overlooking a courtyard and a well, opposite the main building.
Facing the courtyard is the bathroom, totally redone in 2011, you can lay back and enjoy the view on the castle from your bath.

The main room, both living room and kitchen of about 30m2, has a 2 meters large fireplace, a sofa, a big country table, and a kitchen corner. The stone walls, wooden floors, and exposed beams revive the feeling of medieval residence.

The kitchen is equipped with an oven, a gas stove, a dishwasher, fridge / freezer and all dishes and utensils needed for cooking. The ancient stone sink goes along perfectly with the apparent stone walls. The living room corner has a Hi-fi system with CD player and iPod doc.

In the first room, located above the living room, is a large nineteenth century bookcase. The room hosts two persons in a double bed (linen included).

From the second room you will admire the views on the hills around Najac, the castle, and the village. The room hosts two persons in a double bed (linen included).

The third bedroom with sloping ceilings, is located at the top of the house under the roof. Cozy and cute, with children's books and board games, it is ideal for children. It hosts two people in two full size single beds (linen included).

At the top of the tower, a small siting area will welcome you to nestle under the wooden tower roof.

In addition to all the outdoor activities available in Najac, you will have access to three private gardens, a patio and a courtyard.
Next to the courtyard you will find a first garden, southeast, facing the village, very sunny in the morning.
At the bottom of the tower's stairs, you arrive in the main garden, facing south, with stunning views on the Aveyron valley, the village, the castle and the surroundings of Najac.
Next to it is another garden, shaded by a fifty year old pine tree, ideal spot for a cool drink on summer afternoons.

Children will enjoy the little slide and the seesaw, and our never melting igloo.
Parents might prefer the deck chairs, hammocks, or even the barbecue for fun outdoor summer evenings.
If it get hot in the daytime, settle down for lunch in the courtyard, kept fresh by the well and the thick stone walls.

If you feel like a change of atmosphere, enjoy the outdoor lounge in the patio and the breathtaking view on the castle, comfortably seated in chairs.

Najac is a medieval village from the 13th century, located on the river Aveyron.
It is an ideal place to visit cultural monuments and enjoy outdoor fun like kayaking, swimming, hiking, tree climbing, horseback riding, fishing...
The village has many stores, a market, gourmet restaurants and pubs.

A few miles from Najac, you can visit the towns of Villefranche de Rouergue, Cajarc, Cordes, Albi (UNESCO heritage), the abbey of Loc Dieu and Beaulieu, or Peyrusse le Roc and numerous Romanesque churches.

Najac is just 1h30 from Toulouse (4th largest city in France), 3h from the Pyrenees or the sea, and 4h away from Spain. There are lots of castles and extraordinary sites to see in the region, including the Gorges du Tarn, Sarlat, Rocamadour, Albi Cathedral, Carcassonne, and beautiful natural landscapes.

Medieval tower with splendid views and basic comfort
We had a very nice stay in this medieval tower with splendid views of the village of Najac and the valley of the Aveyron. The house itself with its winding staircase, creaking floors and secluded court-yard has a truly medieval atmosphere, and the large garden overlooking the valley is a great place for eating and spending afternoons reading. Comfort is rather basic (e.g., decaying furniture, noisy refrigerator), and when it rains one needs an umbrella to reach the WC across the courtyard. Also, cleanliness was substandard when we arrived. But over-all, we had a great stay and may well come back.

Very ancient building with lots of history and spectacular views
We totally enjoyed the stay. It's a long and winding road up the mountains to Najac but the trip is totally worth it. The house is old, as well as it's furnitures, but all of them are functional and we have everything we need for a comfortable stay. The house is just next to the castle and is one of the important historical buildings in Najac. We owner's friend Stephane is very helpful and showed us around the town. He also gave us a lot of useful recommendations of places to see. Thank you very much!

Stunningly beautiful property, full of character.
What an amazing place! We stayed with our four children and we were enchanted from the moment the door was opened (by Stéphane, our very helpful host for the week). Although this is an ancient house, all the rooms were comfortable. Modernisation has been kept to a minimum which allows the true character of the house to remain, we could really imagine what it must have been like to live in a medieval castle (albeit with modern comforts!) We loved the spiral staircase and the views from all the windows are wonderful. Everything we needed for our weeks stay was provided. The bathroom is modern with a great shower. We had a barbecue in the garden and relaxed on the hammock, listening to the birds wheeling overhead. Truly magical place to stay, especially if you are interested in history.

Wonderful house in Najac, Averyron, France
We have just had a fantastic family holiday in Najac staying at this magnificent house at the foot of the medieval castle. Despite the fact it's over 800 years old, it is in very good condition, clean, spacious, very light and sufficiently equipped for a very comfortable stay. It's a very magical place for children (as our children found out) and adults too. The stone spiral staircase gives the place incredible character plus many other details such as the enormous original fireplace in the kitchen. The views of the village and surrounding landscape are exceptional and the small gardens are a huge bonus. I would highly recommend this house to anyone thinking about staying in Najac.

Like living in a fairy tale
Our family loved staying in this 13th century tower in Najac. It truly was like living in a fairy tale. As Americans, it was incredible to think about the age of the rooms we were living in and the history contained within those walls. The kitchen/living room had everything we needed for relaxing and preparing simple meals. it would be fun to stay in the winter and use the huge fireplace in that room, but just the ambiance of the fireplace was wonderful. The bedrooms are huge - each on its own floor - and the beds are very comfortable. The views out of all the windows - in the rooms and along the spiral staircase -- are fabulous. There are a lot of stairs, but for us every step was worth it. The outdoor spaces are also very inviting - the porch off the entry and the yard with grill in back. Jean, the owner, was a thoughtful host, explaining where everything was and how it worked. He also made great recommendations on places to purchase food and eat in town. We enjoyed getting croissants at the bakery every morning and choosing from the vast array of yogurt flavors at the corner grocery; We stayed for four nights and very much hope to return for a longer stay.

Daniela & Steve (CH/UK)
