Rustic charm

This is a relaxing family home full of wonderful and unique knick knacks and vintage items. It has a great kitchen with everything you need and a dining room and two decks overlooking the serene lake. The beds are very comfortable and there are individual heating controls in each room. It is cozy and comfortable with its own charm that grows on you. And of course there are the beautiful Berkshires and Great Barrington to explore all around.

Great place on a beautiful lake

I spent a week here with a couple of my fishing buddies. Plenty of room for everyone. Parking with a trailer is a little tricky but we where able to park 3 trucks and one trailer. Only issue I had was not enough lighting in the basement but that's just splitting hairs. I would definitely stay here again.

Idyllic Getaway

The place is fantastic -- amazingly comfortable beds, fully-equipped kitchen (everything from the 1980s, as far as we can tell, but quite solid and reliable), beautiful views, perfect swimming, great selection of kayaks, paddle boards, floats, etc.

A perfect house and location for a summer vacation with family and friends!

We went swimming and boating every day, went to Mass MOCA, Jacobs Pillow, the fish hatchery, Gould’s Farm, Bish Bash Falls and biking, and finally hiking on Appalachian trail. Everything is so close by. Steven was extremely responsive whenever I had a question. I would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a lake get away in the Berkshires!

Tranquil and Relaxing

A very lovely home with a beautiful view of Lake Garfield. The surrounding area is very quiet. The house itself has so much room to spread out for a family of 5 adults and also be together at the large dining room table and large living room. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans , dishes, etc. There is no AC in the main living area, but there are plenty of fans to keep it comfortable . And there’s always the beautiful front porch to sit on to feel the cooler air from the woods and the lake. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful family home with us!

Paradise

We had such a fantastic time in this perfect paradise! Loved every minute,. Cozy place, so comfortable for our family reunion. Well stocked kitchen, nice long dinning table to accommodate all, big sectional couch, fans in every room, deck that overlooks lake and 2 large docks to sit and relax. Plenty of chairs, fire pit, even badminton! We used all of the boats, and there are floats, tubes and life jackets too. Excellent communication with Steven, he responded immediately and was very accommodating and helpful. Couldn’t have been a better trip. Thank you!!

relaxing holiday in lovely lakeside house

Spacious house, grounds, and location on the lake are beautiful, we loved the availability of canoes, and the place was great for cooking, dining, and relaxing. We did feel that (especially in this Covid era) the house could use more thorough (professional?) cleaning, for which some 24hour gap between guests might be necessary. It would also be great if host could provide professionally laundered linen. We were alarmed one day when a tree fell at the lakeside (in calm weather conditions). But Steven is a responsive and responsible host and we trust he'll take good care of everything in the future.

Return Family Getaway

This is our second time at Steven’s house. Our family (husband and I along with 2 grown kids and their partners) plans a yearly getaway somewhere different every year. We had such a lovely few days at the lake pre-COVID, we decided to return for this year’s getaway. This time we spent a full week. Steven has the ultimate lake house. When you think of a family lake house, this is what you think of. The lake is clear, beautiful, and peaceful. Coffee every morning on the dock- a great way to start the day. All 6 of us spent some time on either the boards or the kayaks. Son in law did some catch and release right from the dock. Cooked some great family meals in the very spacious, well stocked kitchen. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for 3 couples and lots of space to just spread out and play some euchre. Add a couple nice drives around the surrounding hills and towns to see the local sights and you have a great week! Thank you, Steven. My family and I had a very nice, very relaxing time together. Your hospitality is kind, your responsiveness is timely, and we felt right at home.

Exactly as pictured and described on the VRBO site. Just what I was hoping to find in Montereyfor in

The house is awesome. Comfortable, well furnished, interesting design without being fussy. Lots of space to spend time with family, lots of places to escape to for some "me time". Every bed is comfortable, the showers have good pressure, the kitchen is fully equipped and we took advantage of the grill. I enjoyed coffee and a crossword puzzle on the deck at 6 am every morning. Loved watching the sun appear as the fishermen drifted by. 4 of my teenage nieces/nephews arrived to spend a day on Saturday. Following a tour of the house and it's many nooks and crannies, the phones and other devices were abandoned in favor of a rousing game of hide and seek.....I loved that time with the kids. We had a delicious meal at Koi Chinese Restaurant in Great Barrington and saw a play in Pittsfield. The owners made themselves available by text or phone to help as needed and were both gracious and accommodating. One word of advice-we has some trouble finding the house on a dark and rainy night. I finally tried the app WAZE and it took me right to the front door. I will definitely be back again in the summer. Thank you again for sharing your home with us.

Monterey stay

We really like Lake Garfield, and the house had very good access to the lake. The house is somewhat tired, and there were some things that could use attention like lamps and bulbs that didn't work, but the host was very responsive and we had an enjoyable week.

Peaceful Vacation

House has a great balcony to enjoy the view of the lake and has great privacy, yet close enough to groceries, shopping, and good restaurants, (15 minutes away). Our family loved paddle boarding and using the row boat. The two docks provided easy access and views of the lake. Our family of eight totally enjoyed our peaceful week.

Beautiful, Spacious, Relaxing

My family and I stayed here for a week in July. It was all we wanted and more. So much space for 4 adults and 2 dogs. The deck was a nice cool spot under the pines to enjoy the breeze and lake view. The boat and kayaks provided were perfect for fishing and exploring the lake. Caught lots of bass, and pickerel. The kitchen was very well stocked with spices and cookware. A definite 5 star stay!

Very nice space but much too expensive

This is a beautiful property. The dining room and living room have lovely views of the water as do two bedrooms. It is very spacious and if you go when it is warm, there are boats, kayaks and swimming to enjoy. The place is filled with knick knacks and seems very homey and very muck lived in. However, it was much too expensive for an off season place. Prices for properties advertised on various on line platforms have risen unbelievable and what you see on the first screen as cost is not nearly. the actual cost. In fact, our cost was doubled from what the orginal screen said. For the price charged, we should not have to bring our own sheets and towels, and we should not run out of toilet paper and have to drive 30 minutes each way to get some. I enjoyed the space and being with my grandchildren, but I am not going to rent a place that is that overpriced again.

Great Getaway

The lake house is as advertised. Great! When we first stepped in the door my husband remarked that it reminded him of his grandparents lake house in Michigan when he was young. Sat on the deck or dock every morning for coffee. Our adult kids and their significant others joined us for an all too brief respite. The house was plenty big for our party of 6 adults. Loved having some nice family meals at the big dining table, plenty of room to cook, relax, sit outside. Was there end of Sep to beg Oct and the weather was still perfect. The kids took out the kayaks and paddle boat. The lake is like glass and the sunsets are beautiful. Steven was great to work with-answered in a timely manner and very ‘hands off’. We all enjoyed reading the story of the house left in the information binder in the dining room. Location was good for going to restaurants and the brewery. Only 2 problems: 1) we weren’t there nearly long enough, and 2) I looked for another date to go but the property is quite booked. I will keep looking for a cancellation though-the kids have asked to do it again. Thank you Steven. We really enjoyed your home.

Fantastic

We spent a week at this beautiful property and wished we could have stayed longer. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with spectacular views and spacious accommodations this is a fantastic choice. Our dog had the time of her life wading into the lake to investigate all the ducks and geese. We are certainly going to try and get back here soon. Thank you Steve for the quick response to my questions and for sharing this house on VRBO.

About the host

Host profile image
Engineer/scientist, love the outdoors; flying, hiking, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, biking. Married with two talented adult children. Kathleen, retired teacher, and I live in Western NY, finger lakes region. We love the lakes, their wildlife, wine country, camping, boating and exploring.

Why they chose this property

This Berkshire family lake house has been my family for over 50 years. My parents and siblings cleared the property and helped build the house. Through the years we have added to the house and made many improvements. Making many great memories along the way. Some of my fondest memories were at this lake house with many friends and family. My parents motto was more the merrier. After their passing I purchased the house to keep it in the family and keep up the tradition my parents started as a place for families and friends to gather making and share great times together. Kathleen and I hope you enjoy our lake house as much as we have.

What makes this property unique

We are right on the lake and in a private location. You are looking down at the water from the house front deck. we own two full lots with non-build-able properties to either side, effectively our house is at the end of the road. Two large platform docks, one of which has walk-in access to a sandy beach. Lots of water toys, great swimming, fishing, boating, If you have a motor boat/ski-boat you can tie-off at larger platform dock where the water is deeper off the dock.
