Litttle Red House
We enjoyed the peace and quite. Owners need to have a dehumidifier running, house very damp. They also need to explain that the 2 mile road is a narrow 1 car lane, we had to use 4 wheel drive on parts of it. We thought that the observation area was located between the 2 houses not a 1/4 mile walk to the area or the other house.

Neat Place
This property is 2.4 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a great place to stay. Close to lots of cool activities. The location was nice enough to huncker down in for a while if that’s what your looking for. We will be back.

Little piece of Heaven
To be able to get away from the everyday hustle and distractions that keep us all from truly enjoying life was very refreshing. To not worry about a cell phone or checking emails or whatever might be going on on some social media site. To not watch all of the garbage that is supposed news nowadays, is what this place offers. To experience natures beauty, to hear only the wind through the trees and not the chaotic mess that is the world we live in is what I think everyone needs. Will definitely be returning for a longer visit.

Mislead
We were told property had a full kitchen it only had one pot and one pan. We were given one towel and one wash rag each for two days. There were bugs and spiders in the cabin. We were told by property owners when we got there some people have found small snakes in the cabin. I got I bite on the first night. I picture of the cabin looks to be in an open area it is surrounded by nothing but wood with biting flies no views. Not a good experience at all!

Rustic, Secluded Retreat
If you are looking to be alone in the woods but not in a tent, this is the place. While there are other cabins nearby you cannot see them or hear them. There is no internet, TV, or cell service. It is absolute bliss. The cabin was charming and stocked with the bare necessities. Make sure to bring all your food with you, a big fluffy blanket if you are staying in the cooler months, and download anything you want to listen to or watch. There is an Ingles and a Walmart in Spruce Pine two exits north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The stone fireplace was great. It got pretty cold while we were up there and the fire kept us nice and toasty. There is nice dry wood right behind the cabin, so no need to bring any with you. I do recommend making your fire all the way at the back of the fireplace. We had an issue with the wind blowing the smoke back down the chimney, but it was extremely windy while we were there. My only complaints would be the beds are very small and very hard, and the cabin is a bit musty smelling and dusty. But I wouldn't let that stop you from booking this place. Staying in the Red Cabin is all about the property! The drive in is stunning even when there are no leaves on the trees. There is so much to explore and see around you that there is no need to get back in your car once you arrive. The view at the knob is indescribably beautiful. I absolutely cannot wait to go back in the spring or summer months to see all the wild flowers blooming. All in all, I highly recommend staying here.

Quiet Seclusion
Great spot in the backwoods, which was exactly what we were looking for. Definitely remote, and inspite of what the listing said- no Wi-Fi. ATT did not have phone service either. Home was well equipped and comfortable. Be sure to bring your food and supplies before arriving- it’s a long way to stores.

Neat cabin owned by the nicest people I have met!
We stayed in the "Red House" several days and we loved it. The solitude was perfect as there was no TV, computer or phone service. There was phone service at the observation deck allowing you to make the choice if you wanted to call to check in. Once there you will opt for the view and put the phone away. Barry and Gloria Thomas

Mountain respite
We absolutely loved our weekend in the Red House! So cozy and quiet, we loved being surrounded by nature! Our dogs loved running around near the observation deck, and we loved meeting the owners. We will remember their hospitality forever, and can’t wait to come back!!!

Cozy, comfy, cute cottage
My husband and I enjoyed our stay here. The cottage was very cute. The property is AMAZING! It was rainy and foggy so we did not get to take full advantage of the overlook but we could tell it was beautiful. The cottage is in a good location right off the Blue Ridge parkway near some great hikes. Mt Mitchell is a must see as well as Crabtree falls. Overall the place was pretty clean but the bathroom could have been a bit cleaner as well as the inside of the cupboards. But we still really enjoyed our stay and would go back.

Fantastic Weekend
We had two couples who were part of the trip to the Mountain Laurel Retreat for the weekend. We were full of anticipation and excitement while driving down the narrow gravel road just to reach the cabin. Pure amazement was felt as we first saw the red cabin. A sense of warmth, and tranquility quickly came to mind. The cabin is surrounded by woods, and had everything we needed, from clean water, heat, to A/C, and even wifi. We didn't stay inside too often because the weather was absolutely perfect! Two miles from the Blue Ridge Pkwy was convenient, and the overlooks were worth stopping to take the famous "autumn in the mountains photos." But we mainly stayed by the cabin, and walked around the knob. The observatory deck was a must view to check out the stars. We were lucky enough to visit during meteor showers. We did have some water issues, but Julie and Susan were quick to remedy the situation. We really appreciate the hospitality and hope to return again next Fall. Alisa and Scott

Absolutely beautiful secluded mountain laurel retreat with wonderful friendly owners!
We enjoyed a wonderful 5 days on this 250 acre property. We stayed in the little red house which I believe was built in the 50's. The moment you open the door, you experience the warmth and love and care this cabin has received throughout the years. The cabin was perfect, from the stone fireplace, wood and stone floors, to the selection of the bedding and decorations in both bedrooms. The bathroom was very clean as was the good size kitchen and cozy living room. There was plenty of light throughout the cabin. The heater heats very quickly. There's a porch off the kitchen with grill, table and chairs. There are also cut logs for the fireplace. We brought our two boxers and they thoroughly enjoyed walking the property, playing on the knob, and hiking with us the 4 mile round trip from property to Blue Ridge Parkway. We also went to Crabtree Falls, and took a day trip to Blowing Rock. Mostly we wanted to enjoy staying on the beautiful property! The Wilburns are wonderful people we would like now to call friends. They welcomed us upon arriving and wanted to be certain we had everything we needed. Other than that, they gave us our privacy unless we approached them. The Red House is secluded and private. There is also a Blue House rental which is also private. The Wilburns are "down to earth" real friendly people. You feel more like family than a guest. Susan Wilburn actually painted a number of paintings which decorated the cabin rooms. We feel very fortunate to have been able to stay on their property and bring our fur babies. We wish we had reserved longer than 5 days. We certainly will be back! Some guests have come for 20 years! We can certainly see why! Susan and Jim, thank you so much for sharing your 250 acres of "Heaven on Earth". Sincerely, Valerie, Mort, Banjo, & Zoey

Beautiful, VERY REMOTE
The location was beautiful, the view from the observation deck was phenomenal, and the proximity to Little Switzerland and the parkway was delightful. The beds could have been more comfortable. There needed to be a book of "how to work things and where local things are." Most of all the phone should be fixed as our cell phones would not work unless we were on the observation deck. The remoteness of the cabin should be stressed more as there is no way of purchasing groceries nearby at all. There are quite a few spiders, bugs and other squiggly critters, but if you enjoy the rustic outdoors you won't mind. Overall we had a nice stay and enjoyed the solitude and views immensely. It could have been better however.

Great getaway!
Our family had a wonderful stay in this spacious and homey cabin. It is well taken care of, very clean, and has a wonderful fireplace (included a supply of firewood). It is truly off the beaten path down a gravel road (c. 2 miles) from the Blue Ridge Parkway and you really do have a mountaintop to yourself where the deck is (quick 2 minute walk from the cabin). Lovely hosts. Thanks for a great visit!! We'll be back!

Great views and remote and private location in the mountains!
We loved the location of this little cabin, nestled in the forest off the Blue Ridge Parkway with access to the knob with such beautiful and amazing views in all directions but especially of the Black Mountains. If you are looking for a luxury cabin with quick and easy access to towns with shopping and restaurants, this probably isn't for you. But if you looking for a glamping experience in a quaint little cabin remote and private surrounded by nature, then you've found it! Also, the listing made it sound like you have to provide your own linens and paper products. We did use our own hand towels in the bathroom, but everything else we needed was provided--sheets, bath and kitchen towels, paper towels and napkins.

Solitude and beauty
The Red House is a gem. It is two mikes down a gravel road, you wont be hearing any dounds except nature. There is a mowed, huge, beautiful grassy nob dotted with big trees and an incredible view. Since it is on the Blue Ridge Parkway you can turn in either direction at the end of the driveway and begin hiking or viewing park after park after scenic pull offs. The sweet cabin is clean and comfortable.

Wonderful, relaxing getaway. Don't miss nighttime on the knob!
Oh, where to begin. The Red House was great! The owners are friendly and made the booking process easy and delightful. The instructions to the property were impeccable, and we found the house clean, welcoming, well-appointed, and totally ready for us. We slept well, relaxed well, and felt right at home. The peace and seclusion was exactly what we didn't know we needed. There were plenty of games and a few lanterns we found especially useful for nighttime walks with our pup, Beans. He especially loved laying out on the cool wooden floors. We enjoyed every meal on the back porch, whether it was morning coffee or grilling chicken or kebabs for dinner. We loved walking around the property, for morning walks among the trees or nighttime spent on the knob watching the stars. Honestly, spend every evening up there if you can. We saw the entire Milky Way, planets, constellations, and even shooting stars. The location off the Blue Ridge Parkway was perfect - we were close to several overlooks that took our breath away, and close enough to towns and shopping. If you're not used to mountain roads or gravel roads I highly recommend arriving during daylight; the roads are very well-kept and easy to drive, but can be a little nerve-wracking if you're not used to it. I can't say enough nice things about the Red House. If you have the opportunity to stay at Mountain Laurel Retreat, do not pass it by.
