About this property

Bush Cabin on the Blackwood River (Nannup)

Get back to nature in this tranquil, sweet & romantic little bush cabin on the banks of the Blackwood River between Nannup & Balingup. Breathe the country air, watch the wildlife, enjoy sundowners on the verandah overlooking trees & the river, read a book, stroll around the large private property, visit local attractions or nearby towns, go walking, cycling, or just chill out and relax.

SORRY - NO CHILDREN/NO PETS.

The cabin is located in a peaceful & picturesque rural area in Southwest WA. You'll be in the country but just 20 minutes' drive from the closest town of Nannup - a popular tourist destination for nature lovers, cyclists, weekend motorcycle enthusiasts & walkers. Nannup has several cafes, a pub, brewery/restaurant, small supermarket & a few shops (opening hours are limited). When planning your holiday be sure to download the Experience Nannup website in advance!

We provide lots of creature comforts in our cozy cabin - electricity; gas hot water; kingsize bed with doonahs & electric blankets; en-suite bathroom with privacy screen; reverse cycle air conditioner/heater; two electric 'log' fireplace heaters; indoor & outdoor dining areas; microwave; mini-electric oven; air-fryer; gas stovetop (4 burners); electric outdoor BBQ; crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils; comfy couch/sofa bed in living room; wrap-around scenic verandah with outdoor settings and cocktail bar; birdfeeder with special bird-food; and magical views of the tree-lined valley leading down to the Blackwood River.

Kookaburra Cottage is the ideal spot to unwind & 'disconnect' from the city hassles. PLEASE NOTE THAT MOBILE RECEPTION & WIFI ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU HAVE TELSTRA & A SMART PHONE WITH 'HOTSPOT' CAPABILITY.

For your entertainment, there is a TV/DVD player, a selection of books, movies, cards & board games; resident alpacas & geese; visiting kangaroos & emus; and beautiful tiny blue wrens and cheeky parrots who come for treats.

If you're a romantic, for a special treat turn the main lights in the bedroom ON half an hour before you go to bed. When you retire & turn off the lights, look up & see a sparkling night sky!

You'll have access to your cabin & surrounds plus six acres of private wooded river frontage 'common area' which form part of Fern Gulley Retreat. The valley behind the cabin is ideal for a gentle stroll; to watch the visiting wildlife & colourful birds; or to just admire the view from your verandah. When the Blackwood River is up you can go for a dip, enjoy our "Club Med" tree-trunk sundowners setting or maybe even catch a fish!

As we are not on mains water, PLEASE USE THIS PRECIOUS RESOURCE SPARINGLY. You may want to bring bottled water to drink as sometimes our tap water doesn't taste that great!

Please don't touch or feed any of the wildlife (other than at the birdfeeder with the special food we've provided for our native parrots & wrens). Thanks!

There is a resident caretaker on-site (for emergencies only), but please do not go onto their private property at Cabin #1 unless invited to do so.

We know you'll have a wonderful stay!

Jan & Jeremy

Perfect Tranquility
The cabin is very well appointed with everything you could need and beautifully set in bush surrounds near the river with lots of lovely big trees. The large verandah was the perfect resting place with a variety of seating choices to enjoy the wind in the trees and the visiting Ringneck parrots, wrens, Alpaccas, geese and a lovely king skink and her baby. Thank you for our 4 nights of perfect peace.

Loved it!
My husband and loved our stay, great to unplug and be with nature. The cottage was very well equipped and comfortable. There is a great winery right across the road, and Nannup town center is only 13mins away. Fantasic location, we will be back.

Thank you to Leanne, Jan and Kim for hosting us. We enjoyed our stay at Kookaburra Cabin. It had everything you could need. Bathroom & Kitchen were clean. Bed was lovely with nice, crisp, clean sheets. The verandah was our favourite place to hangout and watch the wildlife. Would love to come back in the cooler months when there is more water around. Towns & places around the area were lovely to explore.

About the host

Hosted by Jan or Jeremy

Host profile image
The owners, Jan & Jeremy, ran a tour company called Global Gypsies for many years. Now that they have retired, although they are based in Perth, they spend as much time as possible at Kookaburra Cottage in Fern Gulley Retreat, Nannup. In between times, they rent their beloved little cabin out to nice people like you who love nature, tranquility & the simple things in life.

Why they chose this property

Nannup is a hidden, friendly, relatively undeveloped small town in Southwest WA. A former timber town, it is tucked away in the forests, is quiet, safe & picturesque with just enough facilities to make it comfortable. Nannup is centrally located with easy access to local attractions & to towns like Margaret River, Busselton, Bridgetown, Donnybrook & Balingup. For a list of things to do to help plan your holiday, download the Experience Nannup app on your phone.

What makes this property unique

The cabin feels so loved & is in such a beautiful spot. It's down to earth but has a touch of class because of the decor, the special touches & the paintings hanging on the walls. It's located on one of the most scenic stretches of road in the Southwest which is a joy to travel on by bicycle, motorbike, open-topped car or sedan with gorgeous views of the forests & the Blackwood River below. Catch your breath then let it out in a long, slow appreciative sigh as you relax into Nannup time...
