About this property

12 Miles South of Carmel in a Redwood Canyon! Perfect getaway in Big Sur!

Only god can make a tree. Probably because it's so hard to get the bark on. Woody Allen.

Sweet dreams are made of this...

Travel the world and the seven seas,
Everybody's looking for something.

The Littlehouse is located less than 10 minutes off of Highway One, and is accessible by a good road in all seasons. It is situated in a redwood forest in a canyon along a tumbling stream. Pleasantly isolated, it enjoys sunny days and cool nights. Its amenities, delightful furnishings, full kitchen, gas fireplace, luxurious bed and bath, generous closet area, private deck, are appropriate for either short or long term visits. Coastal and forest hiking trails and scenic beaches are nearby. Carmel with its delightful shops and many restaurants is a short drive away as is the Big Sur Village, Nepenthe and Pfeiffer Beach . Simply a delight.

Marketing these days is too much with us. Flowery modifiers, lyrically poetic descriptions, vivid adjectives wash over us all day, everyday. I can't take it. Just know that the LittleHouse is a special lodging in a beautiful place.

Gorgeous little escape
This is an awesome little house in the woods to get away from it all...we were able to visit Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur while also getting some great quiet time at the house. The location is gorgeous, surrounded by redwoods with a little creek below, and is tucked away in the canyon. The hosts were great and responsive, and Gerry even helped carry our bags up the stairs when we arrived! They also had delicious bread, eggs, and jam waiting for us. Thanks for a great stay!

The Little House was truly a marvel of a treehouse in the redwoods. If you love the deep quiet of a forest, broken only by the sounds of a brook and birds, this place is for you! The house is beautifully appointed and the hosts are warm and welcoming. They left us a lovely breakfast of eggs and fresh sourdough that we were very disappointed not to have time for due to a rather busy schedule during our brief visit. They were also wonderfully communicative and helpful in advance of our trip, offering incredibly useful advice about the area in relation to our plans. The drive into the house is not for the faint of heart. It’s maybe 2 miles but takes about 20 minutes. The road narrows quickly with blind turns and plenty of traffic early on. The ruts and dips require respect! Your GPS will work but you still need the details of Gerald’s directions. The only things we would add are to confirm that yes, the road becomes dirt. Yes, you go steeply uphill and then down after you cross the steel bridge. And there is a “y” just before you arrive at the house. Bear left. It’s narrow. Don’t cross a second bridge. This home will also require some stamina. I think we counted +/- 90 stairs from the road. They are steep. As long as you add extra time for navigating the road, you are perfectly located for easy exploration down to Big Sur or up to the Monterrey peninsula. It really is a lovely hideaway cradled by redwoods!

Gorgeous cozy getaway in the serene redwood forest
My husband and I couldn't recommend this place more highly. Not only are the hosts warm, welcoming and responsive, but the house is unusually clean, comfortable and well stocked with everything one needs. It is a beautiful property in an equally beautiful setting. Not too far from the Bay Area but far enough to feel like one is away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This place is exceptional and warrants every positive review it has received.

Wonderful Experience in the Little House!
My partner and I had an amazing stay at the little house! While the drive into the canyon from the PCH on a bumpy, dirt road is not conducive to a weak stomach, the juice is definitely worth the squeeze once you arrive and soak in the beauty of the majestic redwoods and decompress to the sounds of the babbling creek nearby. The hosts were super helpful and take pride in providing their guests with everything they need to have a special experience. Highly recommended!

Amazing Getaway
We had an amazing long weekend at the Little House. The owners were above and beyond wonderful and ensured we had a great stay. The tips we got for what to do when on our first day turned out to be perfect based on the weather conditions, you could tell he was thoughtful about his advice. The house itself was gorgeous, clean and couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful location. I would highly recommend and we hope to go back again someday 😊

Spectacular Couples Getaway in the Redwoods
If you are craving a getaway in the Redwoods, this is the spot for you! It is absolutely amazing! From the little patio off the bedroom, you can enjoy morning coffee or evening cocktails with views on all sides of just the redwoods. The home itself is very special. It is decorated so thoughtfully and uniquely. The architectural design nestled into the hillside is fascinating and beautifully done. (Yes, there are a lot of stairs up to the home, well lit and absolutely worth the climb!) From literally every spot in the home, (including the shower) there is a beautiful view of the forest. We were also fortunate enough to have beautiful weather, and the stargazing through the trees was an added delight. Gerry greeted us when we arrived and showed us the amenities. Communication was great, although everything went very smoothly so we didn't need to ask for any assistance. I didn't have any difficulty with the road in my little Honda Civic and the travel into the woods is truly part of the adventure. We enjoyed Point Lobos State Park, Carmel, and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park during our 3 day stay. This was definitely the most memorable and wonderful VRBO we have ever visited. It is the perfect couples retreat and my soul was truly refreshed by soaking in the beauty of the redwood forest.

Respite in the Redwoods
I had a wonderful stay at The Little House in the Redwoods. Being there was so peaceful, I felt my whole being down shift and become truly relaxed for the 1st time in a long time. It's right in the middle of beautiful towering redwoods, with a flowing creek below. I loved sitting out on the deck just off the bedroom, listening to the creek. It was just what I needed. The whole experience was great. I cant say enough good things about my stay. When I arrived Gerry met me and helped me carry up my belongings and introduced me to this lovely little house. Walking into the house is such a visual delight. The craftmenship and design of the space is so beautiful. The whole weekend I kept looking at and admiring the exquisite work that went into building this sweet house. The decor is beautiful, comfortable and welcoming. The hosts Maureen and Gerry had thought of everything to make my stay special. They had a wonderful fresh loaf of artisan sourdough bread on the counter for me, which I ate half of all by myself, it was so good! Also butter, jam, eggs and milk were in the fridge. Plenty of coffee, tea, bottled water, and spices and oils for cooking. Even a couple bottles of wine were available. I loved the way every detail had been thought of, from the color and softness of the towels, to the hand made soap in the shower. Maureen and Gerry are wonderful hosts. I definitely want to come back.

Amazing home and hosts
Gorgeous home set amongst the redwoods and terrific hosts. If you're looking for a place to get away yet be close to the trappings of the modern world, this is your place. Other reviews have talked about the home in detail and they're pretty spot-on. I highly, highly recommend this place. Thanks, Gerald for making our first wedding anniversary so special.

Perfect Getaway for a Long Weekend
We had a wonderful time at the Littlehouse! It was the perfect size and setup, had a lovely stream across the road that was flowing which you could enjoy from the balcony and very nice design/features. Maureen gave great directions of how to get there & Gerald greeted us and helped carry our bags up the stairs. They had a nice welcome spread for breakfast and we enjoyed the huge loaf of sourdough bread. Wifi worked just fine and we really enjoyed our stay in the woods, would definitely recommend!

Perfection in the Redwoods
From the moment we arrived after driving through the beautiful redwood forest, it was nothing less than amazing. Gerry and Maureen were wonderful hosts, and Littlehouse is just perfect. Gerry met us in the driveway and helped us up the steps with some very heavy bags. We met Maureen on the way up. We loved every single thing about this experience. From the decor to the comfort and style. It was great. We very much appreciated the added extras from fresh bread, jams and fruit to wine, water, coffee and tea. We were so cozy and comfortable. I just cannot say enough good things about them or their place. We cannot wait to come back. This was my favorite overnight rental of all time. Thanks Gerry and Maureen for allowing us to stay!

Best Short-term Rental Experience Ever!
Is there an option to give more than 5 stars? Because we would if we could! Everything about this stay was so perfect. The space itself is so charming, relaxing, and unique. The owners were so kind and helpful. We thoroughly appreciated the welcome goodies left for us in the kitchen. Spending several days tucked into this gorgeous forest was so good for our souls. We will definitely visit again.

Epically perfect
Little house was absolutely fantastic. It is a small In-law home that stands alone and is adjacent to the main house that’s close, but still feels like they’re a Neighbor rather than intrusively being part of your experience. The little house is well equipped with everything that you would need and they provide snacks such as eggs, milk, lots of bottled water, coffee, granola, And other small items that you might need while cooking. I can’t rave about this place enough as it truly is a hidden gem, nestled in the middle of the redwood forest, tucked away from the tourists, and the hustle and bustle of Big Sur. There’s plenty of privacy since you have your own small balcony that is isolated from any neighbors or the main house. Gerard was wonderful and helped me with my bags (they were heavy due to the ample provisions that I brought for my stay) and there are several stairs to get up to the little house, but nothing outlandish. The spot is a magical oasis within the redwoods with a perfectly small little house suitable for all of your needs. I can’t wait to return, and I am grateful that something like this exists.

Wonderful apartment in a great location. So peaceful! Gerry and Maureen thought of everything. The Big Sur area is one of the prettiest on earth. There are a lot of steps to the apartment so keep that in mind if you have trouble climbing. We thought it made it feel even more special.

Little House in the Redwoods
There is no way to fully explain the beauty and energy this property holds. We stayed at the little house in mid-June and there was not a single bug around when we spent time on the patio spaces at the property. The weather was chilly but the home was furnished with plenty of blankets that we were able to use while using the outdoor space. Maureen and Gerry were nearby in their home below for the duration of our stay and were very respectful of our privacy while also being incredibly helpful and kind. The ten minute drive back to the cabin is just as beautiful (and much easier for the first time in daylight) as the location of the cabin. We were also able to go into Carmel often and it was only about a 25-35 minute drive. A part of our hearts will forever remain at this property, it was truly a welcoming and surreal and nature filled experience.

Littlehouse in the Redwoods Getaway
My wife and I recently spent two nights at the Littlehouse. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. The house is very cute and quaint in an amazing natural setting. Gerald met us as we arrived and gave us a brief tour of the house. We didn’t get to meet Maureen, but she provisioned the house with homemade sourdough, jellies, butter and milk, which were all appreciated and delicious. The house was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed, including an impressive collection of DVD’s. The giant redwoods and babbling stream made our stay extremely peaceful and relaxing. The location is convenient to Carmel, Big Sur, Monterey, etc. The following items are not negatives per se (in fact, some may view them as positives), but I do think they are worth mentioning in the interest of full disclosure. The house is pretty remote and the narrow road to get there can seem a little intimidating if you are only used to city driving. The house is perched high up on a hill with close to 100 stairs to climb to get there. If you are older or have health concerns, I could see how this might be an issue. The internet is slow and a bit unreliable. There is also, no cell service, although there is a landline if needed. All in all, the Littlehouse is a fabulous, natural getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We would definitely stay there again if we ever get back to that beautiful part of the country.

Littlehouse is tucked in a canyon with serene surroundings. Property was cozy and clean. Nice touch by owners providing fresh eggs, sourdough bread, milk, jams & coffee to help get mornings off on right start. Location offered solitude with nature as well as close enough to multiple parks for hiking and fine restaurants with scenic views. Highly recommend this property.

Quite and secluded
The Little House was perfect for my husband and I. The drive there from the highway is a little bit of a drive and part of it is dirt. It lead to a secluded area where you listen to a stream across the little dirt road at night. The house itself had everything we needed and the hosts were so accommodating, even providing eggs, milk, bread, butter, fruit and jam and had the fireplace going when we arrived. Parking is easy but access may be hard for bigger vehicles to turn around. We loved our stay here and were so happy with our hosts.
