About this property
Kagetsuan main house is a retreat surrounded by rice fields and bamboo groves.
Kagetsuan (Moon and Flower Retreat) has two separate buildings the main house and the guest house. The main house has three bedrooms which can accommodate six guests. The guest house can accommodates four guests. For more than six guests renting both building is available for special discount rate.
The rural landscapes and bamboo forests in front of and behind the building retain the original Japanese scenery that has not changed since the Edo period. Kagetsuan is a 170-year-old building built at the end of the Edo period, and is a valuable building that retains the beauty of ancient Japanese architecture. In order to preserve the beauty of traditional buildings while combining the comfort that modern people need, the building was faithfully restored over a period of three years, and has been revived as a modern Japanese and comfortable space. The main house has a traditional hearth, as well as a living room, dining room, kitchen, and three bedrooms. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessary equipment, as well as a garbage disposal and dishwasher, making it suitable for large parties. There is a fireplace in the earthen floor at the entrance, and the most attractive feature of this building is the large open-air bath surrounded by a courtyard and a pond. The bathtub surrounded by cypress is filled with natural spring water that springs from the mountain behind the house, and you can use it at any time. The water source is a 200-year-old well, and next to it is a cold bath made of Shigaraki ware, and by alternating between the hot and cold tubs you can activate your metabolism. There is a massage room and a training room in front of the open-air bath. The beautifully designed Japanese garden has a small waterfall and a carp pond, and you can enjoy the hot springs quietly surrounded by the greenery and flowers of the trees that change with the seasons. Each of the three bedrooms has a different atmosphere, and one of the rooms has the original thatched roof ceiling intact. At dusk, a muntjac (small deer) comes to visit from the forest. Kagetsuan has three fireplaces: one is a traditional hearth in the dining room, another is a wood stove in the dirt floor, and the third is a fire pit in the garden. You can enjoy BBQ in each place depending on the season and time. The zip line, Tarzan rope, and tree house on the mountain behind the house are very popular with children. There are four bicycles available for cycling around the surrounding countryside and forests, as well as surfboards and fishing equipment. Nearby attractions include the beaches of Ohara and Onjuku, which are a 10-minute drive away, and Ichinomiya, popular with surfers, is nearby and bustling with stylish restaurants and cafes. Every Sunday morning, the Ohara and Katsuura morning markets are famous, and the spiny lobster and octopus rice are especially popular. You can enjoy strawberry picking, blueberry picking, loquat, persimmon, chestnut and other seasonal fruits. Nearby, there are also popular izakaya restaurants, high-end French and Japanese cuisine, where you can enjoy seasonal ingredients. A luxurious private retreat in the countryside where you will not be disturbed by anyone, soak in the hot springs under the starry sky and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Japanese countryside.
