NEST … DREAM … RELAX
CHILDREN:
Children 5 years old & older are welcome to stay, please list as an adult & please let me know.
The house is not set up for young children nor childproof.
THE HOUSE & LOCATION:
This spacious and stunning 4-bedroom late 1930’s light filled house is nestled in South Hobart with views of the city, the river and the mountain. A sensitive and low waste renovation has retained all of the character of the original house, including furniture built by the original owner, and melded it with modern luxury. The house is on a large block where you can enjoy the outdoor amenities or watch the native wildlife (birds, pademelons) from one of the two living areas. Built for the Chief Engineer of the Cascade Brewery and his family, it is named after him; “Bowen Toft House”.
The house is situated just a 7-minute e-scooter ride from the Hobart CBD or a 4-minute car ride. There is also a bus service along Cascade Road. It is perfect for a group or family exploring Southern Tasmania or for those wanting to relax in a quiet neighbourhood.
The house is close to the dining and shopping amenities of South Hobart. Otherwise, Hobart CBD, Salamanca, North Hobart and Sandy Bay beach are all only a short drive away. Additionally, the house is only a short walk from the Cascade historical site, restaurant and 200-year-old beer factory. With all of this within close vicinity, Bowen Toft House is the perfect place to base yourself.
ACCOMMODATION:
The house has 4 bedrooms - a queen size master bedroom with an ensuite, a similar queen bedroom close to the second bathroom, a twin bedroom and an office with a single bed. There are 2.5 bathrooms in all, one with a bath, an ensuite and a powder room. All bathrooms have been set up with “Hollywood lights” to make grooming easier.
There are two reception rooms, both with views towards Hobart. The kitchen retains many original elements and has a mud room adjoined.
There is also a pillow menu provided if you want a particular pillow.
At times the beds might be triple sheeted (like in hotels) to cover the quilt rather than using the quilt cover. The use of quit covers is dependent on drying weather & how busy we are with guests. (Most of the covers need line drying!)
On longer stays or for special occasions, we try to provide robes for guests to use whilst at the house, this is again due to the time-consuming cleaning & ironing process.
We often provide disposable slippers for you to use in the house. This is for your comfort and to keep the house clean. If you use these please take them home.
OFFICE & INTERNET:
A dedicated office and high-speed fibre to the home NBN internet, suitable for those needing to work whilst on vacation.
ENTERTAINMENT:
A TV in each living area with Netflix and DVD players. A CD player in one living room (the sunroom). A selection of DVDs, CDs, board games, cooking & reference books (including those about Tasmania), magazines & a novel swap bin.
HEATING & COOLING:
The house has several heating and cooling options, including passive (i.e., window film, window coverings, aspect, insulation, double brick, outside trees). Throw rugs, heat packs and extra blankets are provided to make your stay cozy on cold days and an air-conditioner and both movable and fixed fans will keep you cool on hot days.
GARDEN:
There is an outside area with dining table and BBQ and additional seating. This is setup in summer as it is not a covered area.
EXTRA AMENITIES:
The house has a range of emergency and household items should you need them.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The house was renovated with minimal waste.
We promote recycling & reuse & there are receptacles in the house for recycling.
The house is fully electric, even the BBQ, to help look after our environment.
SECURITY:
The house has outside CCTV, a security system and window locks on the street side.
PARKING:
There is off-street parking. A standard outside power point could be used to charge an electric vehicle (you will require an appropriate and long extension lead).
Guest access
The house can be accessed from the off-street parking or from the street. There are steps at either entrance. Unfortunately, due to the steep nature of the block, wheelchair access is made difficult. There are many handrails in the front to allow easier access to the house.
The entire front of the block has been fully landscaped and is yours to enjoy during your stay.
Interaction with guests
Check-in is contactless.
Flexible check-in time
There is a contact sheet with our phone numbers in the front hallway should you need to contact us.

About the host
Hosted by Kathryn
Co-host Nance, her daughter Kat & co-host Roger are all family. Family is very important to us, and we like to support each other.
We are all Tasmanian locals & we have all travelled extensively. We have stayed in luxury accommodation to the worst you can imagine. We know what it’s like to be in a new city. We know what it’s like to lose your luggage, to forget to bring shampoo or to have nothing to do when the weather is bad.

Why they chose this property
This house belonged to my Grandparents. I am the third generation to own it
What makes this property unique
The sensitive renovation, maintaining all of the character of the original house when it was built in the late 1930's but with modern amenities.
