Things to do
1. Gippsland Lakes
You’ve discovered Australia’s largest inland waterway system and its vibrant hubs. Here, you’ll find glistening streams, fishable rivers, tidal lakes, and the stunning Ninety Mile Beach. Whether you want to boat, swim, sail, canoe, kayak, or fish, you can indulge in almost any water activity your heart desires.
The Gippsland Lakes, a network of lakes, marshes, and lagoons spanning 400 square kilometers, are separated from the ocean by coastal sand dunes. This area is a haven for bird and marine life, with dolphins and pelicans being popular sights.
A notable geographical feature is the Mitchell River Silt Jetties, now claimed to be the longest in the world. You can drive along the silt jetty into Lake King, with the Mitchell River on one side and the lake on the other. Alternatively, view the jetties from the air to fully appreciate the geography. While the lakes are best experienced from the water, you can also visit from the shore by using one of the lakeside villages as your base. With 40 casual jetties and top-notch amenities, you can hire a boat or bring your own to explore these incredible waterways.
So come and explore the Gippsland Lakes!
2. Snowy River Country
Discover a treasure trove of hidden gems in this region. The rugged high country transforms into a picturesque landscape with cascading waterfalls, vibrant spring wildflowers, and night skies that sparkle like never before. The Snowy River Country Trail, stretching 285 km, is the perfect route to explore the area’s stunning natural and heritage attractions. The charm of the Snowy River is evident in the settlements of Goongerah, Bonang, Bendoc, and Tubbut.
Explore the intricate maze of the Buchan Caves, an enchanting and history-rich experience perfect for families. The elevated Buchan Valley, with its rolling hills, grazing paddocks, and bush lifestyle, is equally captivating.
As you approach the coast, you’ll encounter majestic remnants of coastal rainforest, lakes brimming with aquatic activities, and beaches near Marlo and within the Cape Conran Coastal Park that are picture-perfect.
Whether you choose to raft, hike, drive, or simply capture the beauty in photos, the Snowy region offers adventure and warm country hospitality.
