Neighborhood
When you think of Canberra, you probably think of a drizzly gray city with little spark. However, Canberra has truly grown into its own over the past few years, and anyone who knows Canberra knows that the heart of Canberra is the place to stay. Whether you're looking for practicality, aesthetics, or access to all things fun, you'll be able to find it all in arms reach here. With an abundance of cafes, restaurants and pubs nearby, you'll be able to find a delicious meal without having to travel far. Looking for something a little fancier? Head to Kingston Foreshore - here you'll find some of the best restaurants in all of Canberra. Whether you're craving Thai, Italian, Turkish, or something else, you're sure to be able to find it here.
Nearby is Manuka (don't be fooled, the locals say it Mar-Knee-Kah and might get confused if you say it the traditional way!) - arguably the most fashionable area of all of Canberra. Find a variety of boutiques and local stores selling unique wares. Have you heard of Freakshake before? If not, then you're in for a surprise; make sure you make time to head to Patissez. This hip cafe is the original creators of the Freakshake, and everyone knows you can't beat the original. Whilst you're getting your sugar fix, make sure you check out the rest of the meals they have on offer here - the owners actually started their cafe after competing on My Kitchen Rules, so rest assured they know their way around creating a scrumptious meal. The caveat with Patissez is that bookings are essential! This cafe is well-loved and well-frequented by locals alike.
Head over to the CBD (known as Civic to the locals!) and do some shopping at the newly redesigned Canberra Centre, boasting a range of luxury brands to explore. Craving some night-life excitement? Civic is the place to be, with an abundance of nightclubs, bars, and pubs - there's sure to be something to pique your fancy. (P.S - Beirut Bunker Bar in Garema Square does bubble tea with a bit of a twist, so if you're over 18 and love boba, this place will surely be a hit!).
Looking for something a bit more family friendly? Questacon offers plenty of fun for the whole family - with 7-storeys packed full of science and intrigue you'll be sure to spend an entire day here. Don't forget to check out one of Questacon's interactive Spectacular Science Shows and explore their seasonal exhibit! Once you've been science'd out for the day, head across to the Australian War Memorial and explore Australian military history. Whilst this is a much more solemn attraction than Questacon, it is simply an unmissable experience and is entirely kid-friendly.
You can also enjoy a weekly market at the Old Bus Depot - an old bus shed which embraces the industrial concrete floors and high ceilings and makes it chic, with plenty of lively stallholders offering handmade goods.
Transit
Canberra's main form of public transport is buses, so make sure you grab a Transport Canberra card from a local newsagent. For guests arriving by car, there is free parking i the underground carpark of complex.
